Donald McCain has a great recent record with runners having their first start in a handicap chase, regardless of whether they’d run over fences previously. Since the beginning of 2021, he’s been successful with 13 of the 42 qualifiers (31% strike-rate) for a profit of £25.93 to a £1 level stake at SP. UPAGAINSTIT could be worth chancing despite never having jumped a fence in public before.

In-form Richard Hughes has a solid record with gelded racecourse debutants on the all-weather, scoring with five of the 32 qualifiers. We’d have made a small loss by backing them blind but those who started in the first four in the betting were five from 13 for a profit of £13.43, so market support for EDGE OF AMBER would obviously be significant. This 55,000gns purchase is from a family that does well on the all-weather – his three half-siblings who have had at least ten runs in Europe have all won on Polytrack, two of them here at Kempton.
