Manchester United are planning a sensational swoop for Inter Milan’s 23-year-old defender Alessandro Bastoni with the Red Devils reportedly willing to double his wages.

Bastoni has made 28 appearances for Inter in all competitions this season, tallying five assists from centre-back alongside former United man Matteo Darmian and Francesco Acerbi in defence.

Inter are second in the Serie A table but trail league leaders Napoli are 15 points clear after 25 games played and showing no signs of slowing down to capture a third league title.

Bastoni’s current deal in Milan expires in June 2024 and the Nerazzurri are expected to explore an extension with the Italian international once the current campaign has finished.

How Much Could Bastoni Earn At Old Trafford?

United are apparently willing to hand the 23-year-old almost £150k a week at Old Trafford, which would place Bastoni amongst the highest earners at the club.

David De Gea, Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, Casemiro, Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes, Antony, Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire, Christian Eriksen and Luke Shaw are all earning upwards of that figure weekly.

How Could Bastoni Fit In At Manchester United?

Bastoni plays in a back three at Inter, a completely different system to Erik ten Hag’s 4-2-3-1 at Manchester United with a traditional back four.

The Italian would likely act as a backup for Lisandro Martinez and Varane, but the possibility of a three-at-the-back formation is very real due to Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw’s attacking tendencies and suitability as wing-backs.

The Carabao Cup winners suffered their worst ever Premier League defeat on Sunday, losing 7-0 at Anfield to close rivals Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp’s side close in on the European places.

United are next in action on Thursday night, hosting Real Betis in the Europa League round of 16 first leg at Old Trafford.
