Following Liverpool’s 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United last night, Troy Deeney has compared Reds forward Cody Gakpo to a ‘young’ Thierry Henry.

Cody Gakpo was in fine form yesterday evening, netting a brace for Liverpool against bitter rivals Manchester United.

Both goals were of fantastic quality, as the Reds ran out as 7-0 winners at Anfield.

For his first, the Dutchman was played in behind brilliantly by Andy Robertson. The forward tricked the United defence, cutting inside and curling home the opener just before the half-time break.

His second of the evening was arguably an even better finish. Mohamed Salah turned Lisandro Martinez inside out, before laying off to Gakpo who chipped David de Gea with the slickest of finishes.

The 23-year-old now has four Premier League goals, netting the first two against Everton and Newcastle United last month.

Despite a slow start to life in England, Gakpo now looks to be settling and is providing returns for Jurgen Klopp.

His recent performances haven’t gone unnoticed either, with former Premier League striker Troy Deeney drawing comparisons to Arsenal icon Thierry Henry.

Troy Deeney’s Comments

The former Watford striker was a pundit on Match of the Day 2 last night, and was full of praise for Liverpool’s new frontline.

“They’re younger, faster and stronger than the last front three. Gakpo through the middle is like a new 2.0 of Bobby Firmino,

“The three of them occupy the top line. [Gakpo] is like a young Thierry Henry there with his finish.” Deeney claimed.

“The three of them occupy that backline and the best thing is there is always one in the middle of the goal. This is Liverpool for me at their best.”
