Southampton’s odds to be relegated have moved to 1/3 after they beat Leicester 1-0 in a Premier League relegation crunch-match.
The Saints welcomed the Foxes to St. Marys in hope of winning only their third match in the Premier League this season. That hope started to dwindle when James Ward-Prowse missed from the penalty spot in the opening stages of the match.
However, moments later Saints fans were given a reason to cheer as they saw their side finally take the lead. New signing Carlos Alcaraz stayed composed in front of goal and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner. Leicester struggled to create anything for the remainder of the half and trailed at the break.
Brendan Rodgers’ side came out for the second-half with more energy and almost levelled things through James Maddison. The England international has had a superb season so far, contributing to 14 goals in what has been an injury-ridden campaign.
Southampton managed to keep the Foxes at bay, not giving away many chances and James Ward-Prowse came close to doubling their lead with a dangerous free kick. Leicester came close with a last-minute header hitting the bar, but the Saints held on for all three points.
Can Southampton avoid relegation?
Southampton sacked Nathan Jones after four months in charge, as he managed only one Premier League win during his reign. New manager Ruben Selles has struggled to find results but today’s victory should give a lot of fans hope and build momentum for this relegation battle.
The Saints face a monumental task in their next Premier League fixture, as they travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. The Red Devils face their fierce rivals Liverpool tomorrow, and Southampton supporters will be looking for any weaknesses.
