Newcastle Top Four Odds 2/1 After Manchester City Defeat

The odds on Newcastle finishing in the top four of the Premier League this season have drifted to 2/1 after the Magpies suffered a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday.

Phil Foden opened the scoring for City after just 15 minutes at the Etihad with a fantastic solo goal. The 22-year old picked up the ball out wide and took on five Newcastle players, weaving his way into the box before finishing smartly past Nick Pope for 1-0.

Manchester City doubled their lead just before the 70th minute with a finish from Bernardo Silva, who was substituted on just two minutes before for the disappointing Kevin De Bruyne.

It was in fact Bernardo’s first and second touch on the field that doubled City’s advantage, as the Portuguese midfielder touched the ball out in front of him before hitting a snapshot into the bottom right corner.

Despite losing Newcastle had their chances through the game and new signing Anthony Gordon was unlucky to not score for the Magpies as well as Sean Longstaff and Joelinton who both missed chances.

The loss to City means that Newcastle are now winless in their last six and are in fifth in the league with Tottenham five points ahead of the Magpies. Champions League seems a long way away for Newcastle right now, who are now also only two points ahead of Liverpool in sixth who play Manchester United on Sunday.

Will Newcastle finish in the Top Four?

Although they were in a prime position to finish in the top four just a few weeks ago, a bleak run of form for Newcastle has left them chasing Spurs in fourth. With two games in hand over Spurs however, the four point gap doesn’t look all that big and Liverpool could be the biggest threat to their European hopes.

The defeat to Manchester City does mean that the Magpies have won just one game in 2023 and boast one of the worst records in the league right now.

If Newcastle are to secure European qualification this season, they will have to turn their form around quick and they will next get the opportunity to close the gap on fourth spot when they take on Wolves next Sunday.

Top Four Odds:

Man United @ 1/12

Tottenham @ 5/4

Newcastle @ 2/1

Liverpool @ 2/1
