Grimsby could me on their way to a fairytale story in the FA Cup this season, after the Mariners shocked Southampton at St Mary’s with a 2-1 win to advance to the quarter finals.
- Sékou Mara gave Southampton the lead after 18 minutes before the goal was disallowed by VAR for offside
- Gavan Holohan scored from the spot to give Grimsby the advantage
- The visitors doubled their lead with a second penalty from Holohan shortly after half time
- Duje Ćaleta-Car pulled a goal back for Southampton midway through the second half
- Theo Walcott saw his late equaliser cancelled out for offside
- Grimsby advance to the FA Cup quarter finals with a 2-1 win over Southampton
Southampton thought they’d taken the lead just before the 20th minute, as Sékou Mara turned a Moussa Djenepo cross into the net from close range. After a VAR check however, Djenepo was judged to be offside in the build up and so the score remained goalless.
It was Grimsby who took the lead midway through the first half, as a Joshua Emmanuel cross clipped Lyanco’s shoulder on the way through the box with VAR on hand again to check for any potential penalty.
After a quick check Grimsby were awarded a penalty, which Gavan Holohan cooly dispatched to give the Mariners an unlikely advantage going into half time.
The visitors doubled their lead midway through the second half from the spot yet again, as this time Ćaleta-Car was penalised for lashing out at Danilo Orsi off the ball. Holohan was on hand to smash home his second spot kick of the day, giving Grimsby a 2-0 lead with 40 minutes left to play.

Southampton didn’t go down without a fight on Wednesday night however, as Ćaleta-Car pulled a goal back for the hosts with a smart finish at the back post from a James Ward-Prowse corner with half an hour left to play.
Theo Walcott thought he had equalised with just ten minutes left to play however after another lengthy VAR check, the 33-year old was adjudged to be offside and Grimsby held on to their lead.
Grimsby advanced to the quarter finals of the FA Cup after holding on in the final few minutes of the game, with Southampton’s season going from bad to worse as boos rang around St Mary’s after the final whistle.
