Bottom of the table Southampton picked up only their fifth win of the season away at Chelsea last weekend, but the players were quick to praise the calmness and leadership of caretaker manager Ruben Selles, who has deputised once more after Nathan Jones was relieved of his duties just over a week ago.

It has so far been a nightmare season for Southampton, who are firmly planted to the foot of the table with the second-worst defensive record, and the second-least goals across the Premier League.

Ralph Hasenhuttl was finally relieved of his duties after the club had remained loyal to the Austrian in spite of a turbulent year last season, but the Saints have not faired much better since with former Luton Town manager Nathan Jones brought in on a three-year contract.

However, the Welshman was sacked after just one win in a run of eight games, and an overall win rate of just 35.7%. Ruben Selles, who briefly took charge in the Hasenhuttl/Jones transition, is now the firm favourite to be made the club’s next permanent manager.

Although perhaps not a household name, the Spaniard has extensive coaching experience across Greece, Denmark, Spain and now England, and the crucial 1-0 victory away at Stamford Bridge last time out may serve as a worthy audition for the job.

He recently admitted that he would be ‘more than happy’ to take up the permanent role which has seen his price slashed down to 1/4 in the Southampton next manager odds. It seems more than likely that the club will hire internally – bringing in a second manager this year from outside the confines of the club may prove difficult at this stage of the season.

Elsewhere, now-ex-Leeds manager Jesse Marsch had been touted as Jones’ successor, with the pair being relieved of their duties at near-enough the same time. However, the American’s odds have drifted to 8/1 after talks broke down, although they may rekindle discussions in the summer should Selles fail to impress.

Steven Gerrard remains on the shortlist for a number of clubs since exiting his role at Aston Villa, while it is likely that DC United manager Wayne Rooney will eventually return to England in some capacity – he is currently 16/1.
