Eintracht Frankfurt and Napoli prepare for first meeting in 28 years

Eintracht Frankfurt and Napoli will meet for the first time in almost 30 years during Tuesday night’s Champions League knockout clash at the Deutsche Bank Park.

10,303 days, or 28 years, 2 months and 12 days ago, Eintracht Frankfurt and Napoli faced off for the first time in history.

Frankfurt and Napoli have met just on just two occasions prior to tonight’s showdown in Germany, locking horns in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup third round.

  • November 24, 1994: Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 Napoli
  • December 7, 1994: Napoli 0-1 Eintracht Frankfurt

Footballing icons Fabio Cannavaro (sent off in the second leg) and Jay-Jay Okocha both featured in the tie but it was the latter’s side who would progress and advance to the quarter-finals before being knocked out by Juventus.

Frankfurt and Napoli to battle for Champions League quarter-final spot

According to Champions League betting sites, Frankfurt are 15/8 to qualify for the next round whilst Napoli are an odds-on price of 2/5.

To win the first leg on Tuesday night at home, the hosts are 21/10 compared to the visitors at 6/5.

Frankfurt gained qualification for the Champions League round of 16 by finishing second in Group D behind Spurs and holding off both Sporting Lisbon and Marseille who dropped out of the competition.

Napoli finished top of Group A on goal difference, tied with English Premier League giants Liverpool on 15 points. The Italians scored 20 goals in six group games and are also top of their domestic league by 15 points after 23 games played.

Luciano Spalletti’s side have won seven straight league games heading into Tuesday night’s clash in Frankfurt and with the likes of Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia headlining the forwards, Napoli are certainly not short of attacking firepower.
