As Scott Parker begins to feel the pressure at Club Brugge, we’re taking a look at how himself and other English managers have fared after making the leap out of Britain.
Scott Parker – Club Brugge (2022-present)
In December 2022, Parker was appointed manager of Belgian champions Club Brugge after the club parted ways with Carl Hoefkens – sitting 12 points off the lead in fourth place.
Almost two months into the job, Brugge are still fourth and sit 20 points off the pace as Genk, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and Royal Antwerp begin to gain a sizeable advantage on the 18-time Belgian league champions.
In nine games, Parker has managed one win, six draws and two losses and is already facing calls to be sacked after seven weeks with the club.
Gary Neville – Valencia (2015-2016)
Manchester United legend Gary Neville took charge of Valencia in December 2015 and was sacked just four months later in March 2016, admitting he was out of his depth in Spain.
When Neville was sacked, Valencia were 14th in the league and just six points adrift the relegation zone. In 16 games under the former England international, Valencia won three games and failed to keep a clean sheet.
David Moyes – Real Sociedad (2014-2015)
After being sacked as manager of Manchester United in April 2014, David Moyes took the Real Sociedad job on an 18-month deal despite the club sitting 15th in the table in what seemed a daunting task.
Just under a year later, the Scotsman was sacked amid increasing pressure from supporters and local media. Sociedad started the 2015/16 season with two wins in 11 and Moyes left Spain with a 29% win rate.
Steve McClaren – Twente and VFL Wolfsburg (2008-11, 2012-13)
Steve McClaren managed outside of England on three occasions, taking the FC Twente job from 2008-10 and a role at VFL Wolfsburg from 2010-11.
McClaren returned to manage Twente from 2012-13 once again but later resigned from the post. He won the Eredivisie with Twente in 2009/10 and was named manager of the season, winning 16 of 17 home games and losing just two away.
After being appointed as Wolfsburg manager in May 2010, McClaren was sacked in February 2011 and struggled to find form.
Graham Potter – Ostersund (2011-18)
Playing in the fourth tier of Swedish football, Ostersund appointed Graham Potter as manager in January 2011 and earned two successive promotions before leading the club to the top flight in 2015 for the first time in their history.
Ostersund played in the qualifying round for the UEFA Europa League in 2017-18 and secured a historic entry into the group stage – even beating Premier League giants Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium.
