Liverpool take on Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie this Tuesday and ahead of the game we have taken a look at the head to head stats between the sides, as well as the results of their last five meetings.

Last 5 Meetings

Liverpool 0-1 Real Madrid – 2022

Possibly the most important game on the last five meetings came as recent as in the 2021/22 season, when the sides met in the Champions League final.

Madrid came out on top in 2022, with Vinicius Junior scoring the only goal of the game in the second half to crush Liverpool dreams and bring the Champions League back to Madrid for a 14th time.

The Reds will be out for revenge this year over the two legged quarter final and having lost at the final hurdle last year to their Spanish opposition, they will be looking to go one stage further this season.

Liverpool 0-0 Real Madrid – 2021

Liverpool were held to a goalless draw at home in the 2020/21 quarter final second leg, which meant that the side ddi not advance to the semi-final after a 3-1 loss at the Bernabeu the week before.

The 0-0 draw was played out thanks to a thoroughly professional defensive job from the Galacticos, who were able to stop Liverpool from breaking down their back line meaning they knocked the English side out and advanced to the Semi-final. Madrid were knocked out of the semi-final that year by the eventual winners Chelsea.

Real Madrid 3-1 Liverpool – 2021

One of the more interesting games on this list was the first leg of the 20/21 quarters, as Madrid put on a scintillating attacking performance that saw them beat Liverpool 3-1, giving them a healthy advantage going into the second leg.

Vinicius Junior was on hand to cause heartbreak yet again for Liverpool, as the exciting Brazilian winger scored a brace either side of half time to kill any Liverpool chance going into the second leg.

Marco Asensio was on hand to score the third for Madrid, while Mohammed Salah provided a glimmer of hope for Liverpool with his second half goal.

Liverpool 1-3 Real Madrid – 2018

These two sides met in another final recently and it was Real Madrid who came out on top yet again in 2017/18, as they cruised past their English opposition with some memorable goals.

Gareth Bale came off the bench for Isco in the 60th minute with the scores level and what happened next is a matter of history. Bale scored his first after just two minutes on the pitch, giving Loris Karius no chance in net with one of the most spectacular overhead kicks you will ever watch.

The Welshman was on hand to finish off the game for Madrid as well, as shortly after his first the substitute hit a speculative shot from range which caught Karius out in goal, as the Liverpool keeper let the ball slip into the net handing Madrid their 13th Champions League title.

Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool – 2014

2014 may seem a long time ago to many of us however one man who was still scoring goals for Real Madrid nine years ago was the ever impressive Karim Benzema.

The Frenchman scored the only goal of the game in the 2014/15 game, as Real Madrid confirmed their place in the round of 16 with Benzema scoring for the fourth successive group game in a row.
