Liverpool found no real challenge at St James’ Park on Saturday night, as they eased past Newcastle 2-0 with Nick Pope seeing red in the first half for a horror mistake.

  • Darwin Nunez opened the scoring for Liverpool after 10 minutes
  • Cody Gakpo got his second Liverpool goal with a smart finish in front of Nick Pope

Nunez opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a powerful strike past Pope in net and although the forward appeared to use his hand to control the ball, after a VAR check the goal was given and Liverpool had the lead.

That lead was doubled just six minutes later, as Cody Gakpo latched onto a clever Mohammed Salah pass in the box and finished with a low shot for the second of the game and his second Premier League goal for Liverpool.

Nick Pope was shown a straight red just before the half an hour mark after making the decision to come out of his  box and chase down the onrushing Salah, with the Newcastle goalkeeper handling the ball a good 20 yards outside his area.

There was no real chances in the second half for either side however Diogo Jota did come on late and miss two guilt edged chances to extend Liverpool’s advantage.
