Southampton have sacked Nathan Jones after just four months in charge as the Saints sit at the bottom of the Premier League.

Jones joined in November after an impressive reign at Championship side Luton and managed only 14 games for the Saints, losing nine and winning once in the league. Yesterday’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves was the nail in the coffin for the 49-year-old as both parties agreed to part-ways.

Victories against Manchester City and Newcastle in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup respectively, gave Jones some more time in the job. However, following back-to-back league defeats, the club find themselves at 7/2 to be relegated this season, according to UK betting sites.

The former Luton manager struggled to get fans on side both on and off the pitch, with his self-loving comments in press conferences during Southampton’s poor run irritating some supporters.

Jones said: “I was respected as one of the best in Europe. If others, outside influences or anything, feel that I don’t know. But if you ask me I categorically think I am the right man for the job. I know what I can do and what I do on a daily basis and I know what we need.”

First-team coaches Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan will be joining Jones in leaving the club, while lead coach Ruben Selles will be in charge for Saturday’s Premier League match away to Chelsea.
