Former Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy has enraged Liverpool fans. The Dutchman reportedly wanted Cody Gakpo to join Man United and calls Liverpool a ’10x smaller’ club.

Liverpool signed Cody Gakpo during the January transfer window after he appeared to be destined for Manchester United. The Netherlands international had reportedly been in contact with Erik Ten Hag and van Nistelrooy has even claimed to tell Gakpo to choose Manchester over Merseyside.

Van Nistelrooy said: “I also wanted him to join United – not just because it’s my club and I love them. But also because they are better than Liverpool and offer a lot more potential to their players. But United did not make a bid in January, so I advised him to wait until the summer.”

Liverpool fans have shown their frustration with the Dutchman’s comments on twitter, with some even claiming that Van Dijk has more influence than Van Nistelrooy.

Gakpo has had a difficult start to life in the Premier League and hasn’t been helped by his teammates with Liverpool going through their worst run since Klopp’s arrival.  In contrast, the club he had been advised to join by Ruud van Nistelrooy are up into third place and are into the Carabao Cup final.

The forward is yet to register a goal for his new side and since joining the Reds have seen their chances of winning the league completely vanish. Most UK betting sites have them at 1000/1 to win the league and Gakpo may have been wishing he listened to his former manager, who claimed Liverpool are ’10x smaller’ than Man United.

The former United striker said: “The fact is Liverpool is 10 times smaller than Manchester United, in every department. Gakpo would have been scoring goals for United already, they have great midfielders who create many chances.”
