AUTHORISED SPEED is my idea of the winner of the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle but I can’t resist a buy of outsider BLOW YOUR WAD with Spreadex. Tom Lacey’s five-year-old will appreciate the likely strong gallop after pulling hard on his way to victory at Kempton last time, a run that took his career form figures to 22421 (1-5), with the fourth place by less than four lengths when 22-1 in an 18-runner Grade 2 bumper at Aintree. He was favourite to beat Luccia, antepost favourite for this race before he suffered a setback, when runner-up to that one at Warwick on his debut and the first-time cheekpieces could bring about improvement.

Underfoot conditions are going to put the emphasis on stamina at Sandown on Saturday and there will be no hiding place in the three-mile veterans’ handicap chase series final, which looks sure to be run at a strong gallop. Those in the top five in the weights are just one from 36 in the seven previous renewals, which puts me off a few of the fancied horses. My shortlist comprises of last year’s winner PRIME VENTURE (number ten on the racecard), SIR IVAN (number 12), placed in the last two renewals, RUN TO MILAN (number 14) and COO STAR SIVOLA (number 15), suggesting a buy of DOUBLE NUMBER OF WINNER with Spreadex could pay dividends. Fixed odds punters might wish to back RUN TO MILAN each-way, as he has finished in the first four in 11 of his 12 starts on right-handed tracks.
Recommendation: Buy DOUBLE NUMBER OF WINNER in Sandown 3.00
KEMPTON 7.30
My tracker note for ORAZIO reads ‘Excuses in the Lowther and race working out well (August 2021)’. That was 505 days ago, and he looks very interesting on his all-weather debut after the break. The Charles Hills-trained four-year-old won on his debut at Windsor in June 2021 and finished a solid third in a 6f Listed race at Newbury the following month. He finished last of 11 when a 15-2 shot in the Lowther Stakes at York but pulled very hard in the early stages and simply looked ill at ease on the very fast ground. Buy in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market or take a fixed odds price.
Recommendation: Back ORAZIO in Kempton 7.30
