In the East Lothian town of Musselburgh, just a few miles east of Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, the racecourse is close to the River Esk near its mouth where it flows into the Firth of Forth. Thanks to the Royal Caledonian Hunt, horse racing at Musselburgh and along the south side of the Firth was first held in 1777.
The sandy beaches of Leith even closer to Edinburgh city centre were briefly preferred, yet races returned to Musselburgh following the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1816. A specific turf course was laid out on common land on the eastern side of town. This is where Musselburgh Racecourse has been ever since.
Second only in importance to Ayr races within Scotland, the Musselburgh Links golf course in the centre of track predates it by more than a century. National Hunt horse racing over hurdles and fences was introduced here for the first time in 1987.
Musselburgh races today have All-Weather strips on the bends, added in 2012 to prevent them from cutting up. Something similar is in operation on the turf course at Kempton Park races in England, although that also has a separate dedicated track on an artificial surface.

A right-handed oval track that is flat with tight turns, a full circuit of Musselburgh Racecourse is an extended mile-and-a-quarter round. The top of the home straight is about five furlongs from the winning post and only used for Flat sprints and two-mile staying races on the level. The run-in off the home turn is about half-a-mile on the round course.
There are six flights on a complete circuit of hurdle races at Musselburgh today – three down the back and the same again in the home straight. Despite both its proximity to the River Esk and the Firth of Forth, the going is rarely testing at this race track. Steeplechasers jumps eight fences on a full lap of the course, meanwhile.
There are four in the back straight and as many again after turning for home. The third down in the back and second in the home straight are open ditches.
