Sandown Racecourse Events & Fixtures

Sandown races today

Opening with its first-ever race meeting in 1875, Sandown Park became the first racecourse with enclosures in the UK for its members. There has always been high-class racing taking place at this venue ever since. In that year and on three other occasions in the Nineteenth Century, it was home to the National Hunt Chase before the race found a permanent home and place at the Cheltenham Festival just before the First World War.

Although officially in Surrey near Hampton Court Palace, the town of Esher right by Sandown marks the edge of Greater London. It is about five miles as the crow flies between this track and Kempton Park Racecourse, another venue that hosts both National Hunt and Flat horse racing that is busy all-year round. Sandown races today are very popular even though the area has a number of tracks in it.

While the course is close to and just southeast of Kempton, it is also eight miles northwest of Epsom Downs. This venue also happens to be 20 miles east of Ascot Racecourse too. All three of those tracks are used for major Flat race meetings over a five-week period in early summer.

Starting with The Derby Festival at Epsom, Royal Ascot soon follows before the Coral Eclipse at Sandown Park in July. That is one of the biggest horse racing events in the Flat racing calendar today. Just like Ascot, this venue is home to both a Group 1 Flat race and has similar status over jumps with Grade 1 National Hunt racing action.

Configuration of Sandown Races Today

For Flat race sprints, Sandown has a separate straight five-furlong track that is a gradual climb uphill, but with an emphasis on speed. The round course is right-handed but very testing, especially in soft and heavy ground conditions like Ayr Racecourse or Haydock Park during the winter months, and suits galloping types. A full circuit of Sandown Park races today is about a mile and five furlongs. The run-in on the Flat is half-a-mile, again up the famous Esher hill.

All recognised distances on the level between six furlongs and an extended two miles are used for this code of racing. Hurdle races at Sandown today also take place on the Flat track. There are four obstacles in the back straight and two more after turning for home that National Hunt horses must jump.

Jumps Track has Gruelling Conditions at Times for Steeplechasers

The chase track is a real jumping test with Sandown horse races today ranging from an extended mile and seven furlongs up to more than three-and-a-half miles. If an event involves more than one circuit of the chase course, then horses jump the last in the home straight as an open ditch first time around and then a plain fence as the final obstacle.

There’s a cross fence taken after the winning post when embarking on another circuit, then two plain fences, an open ditch and water jump before steeplechasers encounter Sandown Racecourse’s hallmark obstacles. At the end of the back straight is a line of three fences taken in quick succession called the Railway Fences where the course comes alongside the train track that takes passengers to and from Esher station to the London terminus at Waterloo.

Just before turning for home, where the chase course crosses over and outside of the hurdles track, is the Pond Fence. This is three out but can often be omitted on soft ground or worse because of its proximity to the pond from which it takes its name. The run-in from the final fence to the winning post is about a furlong.

Major Sandown Park Racecourse Events

There are 24 days of quality racing at Sandown every single year. Its Greater London location has plenty to do with that. As one of the most accessible racing venues in the Southeast, it is popular with fans of the sport. Some horse racing meetings are more important than others, though, and the track has lost its Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle that has been moved to Aintree races from Boxing Day 2023 onwards.

That’s as true of dual purpose tracks like Sandown Park that hosts Flat and jump races as ones with just a single code on offer. Those 24 annual horse racing calendar fixtures ensure its busy. These are the major races at Sandown today of the Flat season and National Hunt racing key events too.

Spring Celebration / Gordon Richards Day

April is a time of year in British horse racing where the Flat and jumps overlap. The day before the curtain comes down on the National Hunt season, Sandown welcomes Epsom Derby hopefuls for its very own Classic Trial. While this day is named in honour of legendary jockey Sir Gordon Richards, the feature is a Group 2 mile contest. All the key Sandown races today from this April Spring Celebration Friday Flat card are right here:

Bet365 Jump Finale

The bet365 Jump Finale marks the official end to the National Hunt horseracing season. There is plenty to celebrate, which is why there’s a Grade 1 called the Celebration Chase. The big betting race on this day is the bet365 Gold Cup, though. Run for many years as the Whitbread Gold Cup, there are a couple of Grade 2s on the supporting card. Here’s the lowdown on bet365 Jump Finale races at Sandown today now:

Brigadier Gerard Evening

The Christian festival of Whitsun, traditionally but not always on the last Sunday in May, is marked the Thursday before at Sandown Park races today with Brigadier Gerard evening. Like the Gordon Richards Stakes, the feature race is a Coral Eclipse trial for older horses. There is also another Group 3 giving Flat stayers one last outing before the Gold Cup. This is what the Brigadier Gerard Stakes and this classy evening card as a whole has to offer:

Sandown Coral Summer Festival

The best of Sandown races today on the Flat is the Eclipse Stakes and that’s the centrepiece of the two day Summer Festival. Traditionally held over the first Friday and Saturday in July, the meeting has a long history of sponsorship by Coral.

Ladies Day at Sandown Park Races

Before the Coral Eclipse on the Saturday, there’s Ladies Day on the Friday. This card contains three Listed events including the Esher Stakes over two miles for Flat stayers, which is currently run as the Coral Marathon. Here are all the races from Sandown Ladies Day you can bet on:

Sandown Coral Eclipse Day

The Coral Eclipse has a historic roll of honour. This Group 1 race is effectively the first time that three-year-olds can take on their elders at the highest level and they receive significant weight for age that acts as an incentive. The Eclipse Summer Festival concludes with this card, so here are all the races on it:

There are two Group 3 races on the card, the Solario Stakes for two-year-olds and Atalanta Stakes for fillies and mares. These are all the Sandown races today from this late summer meeting:

Betfair Tingle Creek Festival

In early December, following the big Newbury races at the Winter Carnival, the Betfair Tingle Creek Festival has two Grade 1 events on a high-quality card and jumps fixture. The Esher venue kicks off on the Friday with a couple of Grade 2 novice events. Let’s take a look at the final meeting of the year and Sandown races today in more detail.

Tingle Creek Festival Day 1 – Winter Novices’ Hurdle & Esher Novices’ Chase

It’s true that the Friday is more low key with recognised Cheltenham Festival trials headlining the card. Sandown Park Racecourse received a brand new pattern race in the Grade 2 Esher Novices’ Chase for stayers to boost day one of their Tingle Creek Festival. The Winter Novices’ Hurdle, meanwhile, is a more established event. Here is the card in full:

Tingle Creek Festival Day 2 – Henry VIII Novices’ Chase & Betfair Tingle Creek Chase

Always a major pre-Christmas highlight, the top two-milers over fences in the UK contest the Tingle Creek Chase. The other Grade 1 on the Saturday of this eponymous festival, the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase is also held over the same course and distance. In 2023, the Fighting Fifth Hurdle has been rearranged from Newcastle races to add extra spice to the card. Here are all the races at Sandown on this day:

Making Headway E/W

Go Dante E/W

Knickerbockerglory E/W

Sans Bruit E/W

Making Headway E/W, Imperial Cup, Sandown (9 March, 2:25)

In a typically wide-open renewal of the 2m Imperial Cup Handicap Hurdle at Sandown Park, Making Headway is the nominal selection and top of the shortlist for this valuable race. Trained by Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero, the six-year-old Malinas gelding has an unchanged mark from his novice win at Newbury.

Making Headway jumped well and made all the running and hasn’t been disgraced in graded races prior to that. He chased home Kamsinas in the Newton around Haydock and was then a fine fourth in the Grade 1 Formby at Aintree on Boxing Day. As the three home in front of him have all placed since, Making Headway is one to back each way.

Go Dante Also Off Unchanged Mark

The assessor has left Cheltenham winner Go Dante alone for his Betfair Hurdle third around Newbury the last time, but there may still be another race in him. Trained by Olly Murphy, the eight-year-old son of Kayf Tara should fine this easier than that Premier Handicap four weeks ago.

Go Dante doesn’t match the profile of most recent Imperial Cup winners as an older horse, but there’s no doubt that he’s in good form. The winner from Newbury has been supplemented for the Champion Hurdle, so that pays a compliment to Sean Bowen’s mount here. Go Dante can go well and hit the frame once again.

Knickerbockerglory Seeks to Go One Better

Betfair Hurdle sixth Knickerbockerglory was a gallant runner-up in this race 12 months ago. One of three in the latest edition of the Imperial Cup for trainer Dan Skelton, the eight-year-old Fame And Glory gelding is effectively only 3lb higher with Tristan Durrell again taking the ride and weight off with his claim.

That gives Knickerbockerglory claims of going one better than last year. There is something to find with Go Dante on Newbury form, but he’s better each way value than Ben Pauling pair Bad and Jipcot, who faces the task of a short turnaround from last weekend.

Sans Bruit Could Take Step Forward

Bad just misses out on the shortlist on price, as he’s been a hugely consistent horse in handicaps of this nature throughout the campaign. Given that Paul Nicholls has won two of the last four renewals, his sole Imperial Cup runner Sans Bruit is one to note instead. This six-year-old son of Triple Threat can only improve from his stable and UK debut at Doncaster in January.

That race was run on unseasonably good ground and, as Sans Bruit has an extensive racing background in France, much softer surfaces are what he needs. He now gets that and the handicapper has cut him 2lb of slack for his seventh placed effort on Town Moor. As Sans Bruit stayed further across the Channel, he won’t lack for stamina and will just love the going at the Esher venue.

Scarface E/W

Golden Son

Dr T J Eckleburg

Scarface E/W, 2m 4f Novices' Premier Handicap Chase, Sandown (9 March, 3:35)

Joe Tizzard runner Scarface looks overpriced and a bit of each way value for the 2m 4f Novices’ Premier Handicap Chase on Imperial Cup day at Sandown Park. This seven-year-old Milan gelding meets re-opposing Plumpton conqueror Kotmask off 6lb better terms here.

There was a just a length and a tail between the pair at the line, so the swing in weights may mean Scarface is able to turn the tables. Gary Moore, the trainer of Kotmask, also has Invincible Nao engaged, but recent stable form is a concern. Scarface is worth another chance off these revised terms.

Golden Son Feared Most

Paul Nicholls saddles the topweight Golden Son and everything clicked with him when scoring around Kempton the last day. This six-year-old son of Martaline is up 3lb for besting subsequent Greatwood Gold Cup winner Heltenham by half-a-length.

Golden Son gave weight and a beating to that now 136-rated rival, so his own revised mark of 138 looks fair. Given his French hurdling background, forecast testing conditions are nothing new to him. With Harry Cobden again aboard and on course to become champion jockey if he can keep up his current strike rate, Golden Son is the right favourite.

Dr T J Eckleburg May Outrun Odds

The outsider of the lot, Dr T J Eckleburg, has shaped as though this longer trip may suit him. Trained by Evan Williams, this six-year-old Lawman gelding went close at Chepstow off 1lb lower when last in action. Dr T J Eckleburg again has Conor Ring on board and taking 3lb off with his claim.

Factoring that in, this horse has a featherweight of just 9st 13lb on his back. That has to be a plus on this ground, which Dr T J Eckleburg handled fine in South Wales the last day. He perhaps shouldn’t be the outsider of the lot for the race formerly known as the Centenary Novices’ Handicap Chase when it was run at Cheltenham.
