Newmarket Racecourse Events & Fixtures

Newmarket races today at Newmarket Racecourse

Opening in 1667, Newmarket races today owes a lot to King Charles II even though the sport of horse racing in the area predates him. After the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660 following the English Civil War and Commonwealth period, he inaugurated the Newmarket Town Plate over 3m 6f, a race still run on Newmarket heath to this very day.

The introduction of Classics in the 2000 Guineas (1809) and 1000 Guineas (1814) during the Napoleonic Wars, where horses still played their part in cavalry charges across the Channel in France and the Iberian peninsula, cemented the link between Newmarket and horse racing. Although not as old as The Derby and Oaks at Epsom races or St Leger at Doncaster, their history still dates back over 200 years.

Configuration of Newmarket Races Today

There are two race tracks used for thoroughbred horse racing under Rules at Newmarket. The Rowley Mile, which is the course use for spring and autumn meetings, is quite testing despite being straight unless a race goes beyond a mile-and-a-quarter. There is a famous dip near some bushes two furlongs from the winning post which can unbalance horses.

Over the summer, meanwhile, the July Course is in use at Newmarket Racecourse. This is less undulating than the Rowley Mile but the horses taking to it will often need to act on good or even good to firm ground. There is a bend for horses to take much nearer the finish on the July Course too, but it’s still best suited to galloping types.

Key Newmarket Racecourse Fixtures – Five Major Race Meetings

There are plenty of Newmarket horse races today with well-established annual race meetings most weeks from April through until mid-autumn. It’s a busy track but that is no surprise given its place in the world of horse racing and nickname. There are five major meetings among Newmarket races today that are most significant. See all of the biggest races in the table below:

Newmarket Racecourse Events Feature Races When
Craven Meeting Craven Stakes, Nell Gwyn Stakes April
QIPCO Guineas Festival 2000 Guineas, 1000 Guineas April / May
July Festival Falmouth Stakes, July Cup July
Cambridgeshire Meeting Cheveley Park Stakes, Middle Park Stakes September
Future Champions Festival Fillies’ Mile, Dewhurst Stakes October

Craven Meeting

The first races at Newmarket today of the calendar year in the middle of April is the Craven Meeting. Usually in midweek on three consecutive days from Tuesday to Thursday after the Grand National at Aintree, events on the undulating Rowley Mile include Classic trials for the Guineas Festival.

These are the Nell Gwyn Stakes for fillies and Craven Stakes for colts and geldings. Both hold Group 3 status alongside the Abernant Stakes, a sprint contest open to older horses, and the Earl Of Sefton Stakes. With only the 10-furlong straight in use here, the table below lists all of the Craven Meeting black types races:

Craven Meeting Races Class of Race Type of Race Race Distance
Earl Of Sefton Stakes Group 3 4yo+ Flat Race 1m 1f
Feilden Stakes Listed 3yo Flat Race 1m 1f
Nell Gwyn Stakes Group 3 3yo Flat Race 7f
Abernant Stakes Group 3 3yo+ Flat Race 6f

QIPCO Guineas Festival

Perhaps the most famous of Newmarket races today, the 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas hold Classic status. Open to three-year-old colts and fillies, respectively, these age restricted Group 1 races have special significance for the future of the Flat thoroughbred racehorse in Europe.

From 2022 onwards, the QIPCO Guineas Festival over the May Day Bank Holiday Weekend is a three-day meeting. The opening day, now a Friday, sees Epsom Derby hopefuls run in the Newmarket Stakes with the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes for older horses headlining the card.

As tradition demands, the Saturday builds to the 2000 Guineas – a straight mile contest on the Rowley Mile. Supporting Newmarket horse races today include the Group 3 Palace House Stakes, another sprint, and the Suffolk Stakes Heritage Handicap.

Fillies and mares are in the spotlight on the third and final day of the Guineas Festival. Supporting the 1000 Guineas is the Pretty Polly Stakes, an early trial for the Epsom Oaks and other middle-distance events for three-year-old females. The Group 2 Dahlia Stakes, meanwhile, gives older fillies and mares a run over nine furlongs. Check out all black type Newmarket Racecourse events during the Guineas Festival here:

July Festival

The July Course, used for Newmarket Racecourse events over the summer, is a right-handed and undulating track that suits galloping types. Races up to a mile are on the straight and uphill all the way. They call this the Bunbury Mile. Longer distance events involve a downhill run to the home turn with a sharper bend than the Rowley Mile course.

Chief among all the Newmarket races today on the July Course is the July Festival held in the second week of that month on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. This is three weeks after Royal Ascot and before the Irish Oaks Weekend.

Audience, Challenge Stakes, Newmarket (13 Oct, 3:00)

Back on forecast quicker ground, Audience has leading form claims for the 7f Group 2 Challenge Stakes at Newmarket on the opening day of their Future Champions Festival. Trained by John & Thady Gosden for Cheveley Park Stud, this four-year-old Iffraaj gelding won on the July Course over the summer.

That success for Audience came over this trip on reappearance in the Group 3 Criterion Stakes. He has since chased home the mighty Kinross in the City Of York Stakes before a softer surface scuppered success in the Park Stakes at Doncaster last month when Sandrine just held him.

Unless there is substantial rain at Headquarters, Audience will have his optimum conditions for this assignment. With regular jockey Rab Havlin again aboard, expect a big run off top official rating of 116 over this real specialists’ trip.

Chindit is best at a mile and has had a long season, while seven-year-old Pogo looks fully exposed and not the force of old. The dangers on paper lie at the bottom of the racecard with the youngsters challenging Audience. King Charles II winner Shouldvebeenaring returns to the scene of his last triumph.

Like Chindit, this three-year-old Middleham Park Racing owned Havana Grey colt is trained by Richard Hannon. Shouldvebeenaring has claims on the pick of his form, which includes two second places in the Sandy Lane and Sprint Cup at Haydock and when third in the Prix de la Foret over in France last time out.

Much the same as the favourite, Shouldvebeenaring is a course and distance winner. The only question mark is the stable form and whether he’s been to the well once too often with this his 13th run of the year. Those near misses at Haydock suggest that Shouldvebeenaring is up to this level of competition under stable jockey Sean Levey.

There are two three-year-olds coming over from Ireland and 1000 Guineas third Matilda Picotte would have her chances enhanced by plenty of rain hitting the track. Trained by Kieran Cotter, this Sioux Nation filly was just behind subsequent King’s Stand hero Bradsell when fourth in the Sandy Lane.

Although there’s plenty to find with Shouldvebeenaring on that Haydock form, Matilda Picotte ran out an impressive winner of the Group 3 Sceptre Stakes against fellow females at Doncaster over this trip the last day. If the heavens open, then her odds look sure to shorten with Oisin Murphy again taking the ride.
