Newmarket Racecourse Events & Fixtures
Opening in 1667, Newmarket races today owes a lot to King Charles II even though the sport in the area predates him. After the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660 following the English Civil War and Commonwealth period, he inaugurated the Newmarket Town Plate over 3m 6f, a race still run on Newmarket heath to this very day.
The introduction of Classics in the 2000 Guineas (1809) and 1000 Guineas (1814) during the Napoleonic Wars, where horses still played their part in cavalry charges across the Channel in France and the Iberian peninsula, cemented the link between Newmarket and horse racing. Although not as old as The Derby, Oaks or St Leger, their history still dates back over 200 years.
There are plenty of Newmarket horse races today with meetings most weeks from April through until mid-autumn. It’s a busy track but that is no surprise given its place in the world of horse racing and nickname. There are five major meetings among Newmarket races today that are most significant. See those in the table below:

Craven Meeting | Craven Stakes, Nell Gwyn Stakes | April |

Craven Meeting
The first races at Newmarket today of the calendar year in the middle of April is the Craven Meeting. Usually in midweek on three consecutive days from Tuesday to Thursday after the Grand National at Aintree, events on the undulating Rowley Mile include Classic trials for the Guineas Festival.
These are the Nell Gwyn Stakes for fillies and Craven Stakes for colts and geldings. Both hold Group 3 status alongside the Abernant Stakes, a sprint contest open to older horses, and the Earl Of Sefton Stakes. With only the 10-furlong straight in use here, the table below lists all of the Craven Meeting black types races:

Perhaps the most famous of Newmarket races today, the 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas hold Classic status. Open to three-year-old colts and fillies, respectively, these age restricted Group 1 races have special significance for the future of the Flat thoroughbred racehorse in Europe.
From 2022 onwards, the QIPCO Guineas Festival over the May Day Bank Holiday Weekend is a three-day meeting. The opening day, now a Friday, sees Epsom Derby hopefuls run in the Newmarket Stakes with the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes for older horses headlining the card.
As tradition demands, the Saturday builds to the 2000 Guineas – a straight mile contest on the Rowley Mile. Supporting Newmarket horse races today include the Group 3 Palace House Stakes, another sprint, and the Suffolk Stakes Heritage Handicap.
Fillies and mares are in the spotlight on the third and final day of the Guineas Festival. Supporting the 1000 Guineas is the Pretty Polly Stakes, an early trial for the Epsom Oaks and other middle-distance events for three-year-old females. The Group 2 Dahlia Stakes, meanwhile, gives older fillies and mares a run over nine furlongs. Check out all black type Newmarket Racecourse events during the Guineas Festival here:

July Festival
The July Course, used for Newmarket Racecourse events over the summer, is a right-handed and undulating track that suits galloping types. Races up to a mile are on the straight and uphill all the way. They call this the Bunbury Mile. Longer distance events involve a downhill run to the home turn with a sharper bend than the Rowley Mile course.
Chief among all the Newmarket races today on the July Course is the July Festival held in the second week of that month on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. This is three weeks after Royal Ascot and before the Irish Oaks Weekend. The opening day of this meeting includes a St Leger trial in the Bahrain Trophy, plus the July Stakes for two-year-olds.
Fillies that ran in the 1000 Guineas can return to Newmarket for the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes on the second day of the July Festival and take on their elders. The July Cup, meanwhile, headlines the final day of the meeting with top sprinters taking part over six furlongs. Get a list of all the big July Festival races in the table below:

Cambridgeshire Meeting
Just like they always have, races at Newmarket today sit on the border between the counties of Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. The former lends its name to an entire three-day meeting in late September running Thursday, Friday and Saturday after Irish Champions Weekend, the St Leger Festival and the Ayr Gold Cup.
A couple of Group 3 races in the Somerville Tattersalls Stakes for juveniles and Princess Royal Stakes for fillies and mares kick the Cambridgeshire Meeting off. There is Group 2 action on the Friday, meanwhile, with the Rockfel Stakes for two-year-olds and Joel Stakes for older horses.
While the big betting race is the Cambridgeshire Handicap, the Saturday has two Group 1 races on the card. The Middle Park Stakes for colts and Cheveley Park Stakes for fillies are big tests for juveniles towards the end of their first year racing on track. There are also two big Heritage Handicaps at the Future Champions Festival.
