Haydock Park opened as we know it today in 1899, although the roots of horse racing in the Newton-le-Willows area date back until at least the middle of the Nineteenth Century. Historically within the county of Lancashire, Haydock races today include both jumps and Flat events depending on the time of year.
One of two tracks in the Merseyside area of Liverpool and its environs owned by The Jockey Club alongside Aintree, it is one of the busiest racetracks in the UK. Much like Newbury races today, Haydock is home to both a Group 1 Flat race and Grade 1 National Hunt event.
The Jockey Club Racecourses
Haydock Park is among 14 English racecourses owned by The Jockey Club today. These are spread far and wide from East Anglia to Devon and even further north than Merseyside up into Cumbria. Check out all of The Jockey Club Racecourses track by track:

Configuration of Haydock Races Today
A left-handed course with a full circuit covering about a mile-and-a-half, there is also a six-furlong straight track for sprints. There are few if any undulations other than a slight rise on this flat track. Jumps races at Haydock today have some stiff fences for the horses contesting steeplechases.
Four of these come in the home straight with the second one down the chase track being an open ditch. Due to the busy schedule on the Flat, there is also an inner straight track again six furlongs in length. A Haydock Park afternoon meeting often clashes with class races at Ascot Racecourse down south, although both tracks serve different audiences.
Haydock races today still take place on heavy going, especially in the winter months of December, January and February. Ground conditions at the course even get like it earlier in the autumn sometime, so it’s not unusual for the feature Haydock Sprint Cup in September to be run on a testing surface. Drainage has always been a bit of an issue at Haydock Park, so bottomless ground does happen.
This venue also hosts the Betfair Chase, the first big race of the season over fences and opening leg of the Stayers Chase Triple Crown ahead of the King George VI Chase at Kempton and Cheltenham Gold Cup. That is in November with other major races and National Hunt meetings in January and February. Feature jump races at those fixtures include the Peter Marsh Chase and official Grand National Trial.

It isn’t long into the calendar year before major Haydock races today take place. Peter Marsh Chase day in January competes with the Clarence House Chase card at Ascot for top billing. There is a Grade 2 trial for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival at this meeting on Merseyside, though, in the Rossington Main. The Champion Hurdle Trial and Altcar Novices’ Chase are no longer run. Here are details of the big races on the Peter Marsh Chase day card:

With the official Grand National Trial taking place at Haydock in mid-February, even though the big race itself is at Aintree, there’s a certain irony to that. As trials for the world’s most famous steeplechase going, this Premier Handicap over fences has no record of producing winners.
That doesn’t stop the bookies shortening up horses that ran well at Haydock in the Grand National betting, though, and there are more Cheltenham trials on the supporting card. These include juvenile and staying hurdle races, plus a hunter chase. Get the lowdown on Grand National Trials day in the table below:

Moving on to the Flat, midway through May is the Temple Stakes raceday. These Haydock races today are all about sprint contests and getting horses ready to run at Royal Ascot the following month. Although it has fallen right at the end of May once before, the John Of Gaunt Stakes at Haydock Park races is most often held in June some seven days after the Epsom Derby is run. There are two Group 3 events on the card with the feature being one that honours the famous Duke of Lancaster. Also taking place here is the Pinnacle Stakes for fillies and mares, renamed in memory of legendary jockey Lester Piggott following his death. This is the John Of Gaunt card in full:

With a card headlined by the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks for fillies and mares, a middle distance race and trial for the following month’s Yorkshire Oaks at York races, the meeting’s eponymous Old Newton Cup is the big betting handicap. There’s a two-day meeting of Haydock Park races in August grandly called the Rose Of Lancaster Carnival. While the Friday contains low-grade Class 4 and 5 action, Ladies Day on the Saturday is headlined by a Group 3 contest. This is the Rose Of Lancaster Stakes over an extended mile-and-a-quarter. Before the concept of Merseyside existed, Haydock Racecourse fell within the historic boundaries of Lancashire, the Red Rose county. Here is the full Ladies Day card:

Following on from other Group 1s like the July Cup at Newmarket races and Nunthorpe Stakes during the Ebor Festival at York, one of the top-tier races in the Sprint Cup at Haydock Racecourse takes place in early September. A six-furlong race and established part of the pattern for thoroughbreds that are pure speed, it often throws up different results to the summer sprints due to softer ground. Here are all the races from the Haydock Sprint Cup card with supporting events including the Group 3 Superior Mile and the Old Borough Cup:

While there are plenty of other meetings on Merseyside throughout the autumn and remainder of the year, the most famous of Haydock races today over jumps is the Betfair Chase. The big race and its card usually takes place on soft ground during the third or fourth Saturday in November after Cheltenham the week before and prior to the Newbury races at the Winter Carnival. On the last Saturday before Christmas, Haydock Park races once again go head-to-head with Ascot with a jumps card. Rounding out the year at Haydock races today is the Betfred-sponsored Last Fling Chase card before the year is out. This extended 3m 4f handicap, which can be a pointer to the Grand National Trial, remembers and honours a horse called The Last Fling who was a regular on Merseyside. 2024 Superior Mile Tips
Holloway Boy E/W, Superior Mile, Haydock (7 Sept, 1:15)After running a string of fine races in handicaps under welter burdens, it is time that Holloway Boy tried himself in pattern company once again and connections book Ryan Moore for the ride in the Group 3 Superior Mile on Sprint Cup day at Haydock Park. Trained by Karl Burke, this four-year-old Ulysses gelding placed in the grade as a juvenile.
Holloway Boy was nearest at the finish when fifth in the Royal Hunt Cup, then got up into second close home in a mile handicap on the Eclipse card at Sandown. Although 2lb worse off at the weights with re-opposing winner Cicero’s Gift, that one bombed out big time during Glorious Goodwood.
Meanwhile, Holloway Boy hit the frame once again with third places in the Golden Mile at that meeting and the Clipper Heritage Handicap at last month’s Ebor Festival in York. He is knocking on the door, but perhaps finding giving lumps of weight (16lb and 15lb respectively) away just too difficult. Holloway Boy therefore rates a solid each way bet upped in class in an open race.
Return to Softer Ground Could Suit Cicero’s Gift
Connections of the aforementioned Cicero’s Gift blamed the quick summer ground for trailing in last of seven at Goodwood. When Charlie Hills’ four-year-old Muhaarar colt scored around Sandown, the going was soft. Previous turf wins for Cicero’s Gift have also come with cut in the ground.
He could get his optimum conditions on Merseyside, then. Rossa Ryan now takes the ride and, after six career starts, still remains open to further progress. Off 2lb better terms with Holloway Boy from their Esher encounter, Cicero’s Gift may be able to confirm form, but he does have to bounce back.
Race Terms in Favour of Clove Hitch
Andrew Balding won the Superior Mile back in 2018 with Here Comes When and now sends three-year-old filly Clove Hitch up to Haydock off bottom weight. Juddmonte’s daughter of Siyouni receives 5lb weight for age and a 3lb sex allowance, which brings her very close to Cicero’s Gift on adjusted ratings.
Clove Hitch has the question mark of whether cut in the ground really suits her with her one career victory to date on good to firm going. With just five starts under her belt, however, it is too early to write her off and the remainder of the field have more question marks against them.
Witch Hunter needs everything to drop right, while course and distance specialist Sparks Fly has a lot more on her plate than a low grade handicap. Regal Reality is a nine-year-old and very in and out. Prague needs to prove dropping in trip will suit. By process of elimination, Clove Hitch completes the shortlist here.

2024 Haydock Sprint Cup Tips
Shouldvebeenaring E/W, Haydock Sprint Cup, Haydock (7 Sept, 3:35)Richard Hannon went close to land the 6f Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup with Shouldvebeenaring 12 months ago and dropping him back to this trip with some cut in the ground makes sense. This Middleham Park Racing owned four-year-old Havana Grey colt was only beaten a neck over course and distance here last season and looks each way value.
Shouldvebeenaring has since finished a nose behind subsequent July Cup scorer Mill Stream earlier in the campaign and won a Group 3 in France on good to soft going. He can be forgiven a disappointing third in the City Of York last month as high draws were a hindrance on the Knavesmire. That may not be the case here and Shouldvebeenaring looks worth another chance with bookies paying four places.
Course & Distance Winner Inisherin Sets Standard
Sheikh Mohammed Obaid boasts a strong hand for the Sprint Cup with Sandy Lane winner Inisherin the only past track and trip scorer. A return to softer going won’t be a problem for Kevin Ryan’s three-year-old Shamardal colt reinvented himself as a sprinter when successfully dropping back over course and distance here in May.
Inisherin went on to land the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup during Royal Ascot, then disappointed in the July Cup at Newmarket. There seems to be something about Headquarters he doesn’t like after three defeats across the two tracks there in as many starts. Ryan has two recent wins in the Sprint Cup, so the market fears Inisherin bouncing back.
Elite Status the Pick of Burke Trio
Another Yorkshire-based handler in Karl Burke runs three on Merseyside with Elite Status the pick of the bunch. Also representing Sheikh Mohammed Obaid, this three-year-old son of Havana Grey handled soft ground in France last summer and has since landed consecutive races at Newbury.
While Elite Status could still have progress in him, he does have something to prove beyond Group 3 level yet will handle conditions better than four-year-old filly Swingalong, fourth in the Sprint Cup of 2023, who needs a sound surface. Completing the Burke trio is six-year-old Vadamos gelding Spycatcher, who has Ryan Moore in the saddle.
Moss Tucker Could Outrun Odds
Lengthy racecourse absences aren’t really a plus for this, so ratings topper Bucanero Fuerte might need the run. Similar comments apply to Annaf. Inisherin has the beating of Jasour and Kind Of Blue on Royal Ascot form, while Montassib only has a Group race win on the All-Weather.
William Haggas’ other runner, Unequal Love, may turn the tables on Flora Of Bermuda off 4lb better terms from York in July. Of those at bigger prices, Moss Tucker is interesting if coming across from Ireland. Trained by Ken Condon, the six-year-old Excelebration gelding won the Group 1 Flying Five around this time last season.
Moss Tucker is better with cut in the ground than on fast going. He need almost every yard on good to yielding to get up at the Curragh 12 months ago and it’s interesting that connections declare him here, rather than mounting a defence of his Flying Five crown. Moss Tucker could well run better than his massive odds suggest.
