Goodwood Racecourse Events & Fixtures

Goodwood races today at Goodwood Racecourse

Located on the Goodwood Estate, the seat of the Duke of Richmond in West Sussex near Chichester, Goodwood today races from the end of April until early October. It’s Flat horse racing only here with the sport’s history dating back to at least the late Eighteenth Century.

The course has a reputation as an easy track but Goodwood can be difficult for jockeys to ride. As well as being the place where the first flag start to a horse race in Britain took place, the meeting known today as Glorious Goodwood and the Qatar Goodwood Festival for sponsorship reasons began in 1802.

Configuration of Goodwood Races Today

There are different start points used for Goodwood Racecourse events and fixtures depending on the distance involved. The Stewards’ Cup Course is a downhill run for sprints over five and six furlongs. All other Goodwood races today go right-handed with those over seven furlongs up to a mile-and-a-quarter taking the lower bend.

Events on the Craven Course, up to 11 furlongs, include the Nassau Stakes. The Gratwicke Course, meanwhile, is for races at a mile-and-a-half and uses the top bend passing the iconic Oak Tree Corner.

Several key races at Goodwood today are held on the Bentinck Course. These include the March Stakes, the last of the trial races for Doncaster‘s St Leger in September. This is a mile-and-three-quarters, running the top loop past Oak Tree Corner, then tacking over to the far side past Goodwood Forest.

The Cup Course for long distance events sees races start on the home straight and race in a complete loop Both the Goodwood Cup, first run in 1812, and Goodwood Handicap over an even greater trip take this track with the former starting on the lower bend before sweeping round the top bend into the home straight.

It’s traditionally very difficult for to get up the far side rail in the home straight on dropped out horses at Goodwood. This sharp track doesn’t suit every horse, especially the undulating and somewhat snaking nature of longer races. Overlooking it all is Trundle Hill, an Iron Age fort which gives splendid views of Goodwood Racecourse free of charge.

Glorious Goodwood Races Today

Glorious Goodwood, officially the Qatar Goodwood Festival, needs a more detailed look as it’s one of the biggest meetings in British racing today. Held over five days at the end of July and often running into August, this is the course’s flagship event and follows on from Royal Ascot in June. There are three Group 1 Glorious Goodwood races today in the Goodwood Cup, Sussex Stakes and Nassau Stakes for fillies and mares.

These headline each of the first three days of the Qatar Goodwood Festival. The big betting race, the Stewards’ Cup, is a huge field Heritage Handicap over six furlongs. This takes place on the final day of Glorious Goodwood. Starting on a Tuesday, the meeting is on at the same time as the Galway Races in Ireland. All five of Goodwood Racecourse’s tracks are in use for the festival.

Nostrum, Thoroughbred Stakes, Glorious Goodwood 2023 (4 August, 2:10)

Testing ground asks a different question of Nostrum but his dam won on a soft surface, so conditions may not be a barrier to more success in the 1m Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes for three-year-olds on the penultimate day of Glorious Goodwood. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute for owner-breeders Juddmonte, this Kingman colt escapes a penalty for winning in this grade as a juvenile.

Nostrum had Classic claims before a setback ruled him out of the 2000 Guineas. He’s now making up for lost time, bolting up in the Listed 1m Sir Henry Cecil Stakes at Newmarket’s July Festival on belated reappearance. That race has been a stepping stone to this one in recent years. Nostrum sets a clear and obvious form standard off top rating of 114 with Ryan Moore again booked to ride and unbeaten in three starts aboard.

Dual Ascot handicap winner Docklands may be popular with punters up in grade, but the highly-tried Epictetus instead could present the biggest danger to the favourite. Trained by John and Thady Gosden, this other Kingman colt landed the Blue Riband Trial at Epsom on soft ground and reappearance.

Epictetus was then far from disgraced when fifth in the Group 2 Dante Stakes at York and the French Derby, the Prix du Jockey Club. As he didn’t handle fast going at Royal Ascot when an eased 13th in the Hampton Court, going back down in trip makes sense. Epictetus placed behind Auguste Rodin on heavy ground in Group 1 company at Doncaster, so clearly has some ability with cut in the ground.

Of the rest, Knight is the most lightly-raced and landed a Newbury Group 3 on heavy as a juvenile. He’s an interesting contender after being given a break following a disappointing run in the Greenham Stakes there on reappearance. Trained by Simon and Ed Crisford, this son of Mehmas has also been gelded since we last saw him.

If the cruellest cut of all has helped calm him down, then Knight remains open to further progress. Connections book James Doyle for the ride again, which looks significant. It’d be no surprise if Knight outran his odds and into a place as he’s a full brother to last season’s Prix de la Foret runner-up Malavath.

Our Golden Mile Tips

Fri, 4 Aug 2023 , 15:00 GMT • Glorious Goodwood • Flat

Lattam

Awaal E/W

Blue For You E/W

Rhoscolyn E/W

Lattam, Golden Mile Handicap, Glorious Goodwood 2023 (4 August, 3:00)

Lattam loves soft ground and brings good form to the table for the Golden Mile Heritage Handicap, the big betting race on day four of Glorious Goodwood. Trained by William Haggas, this four-year-old Lope De Vega gelding landed the Irish Lincolnshire off 87 on reappearance. While he needed every yard of this trip at the Curragh to get up, Lattam has since proven he can still be very effective off higher marks.

Only subsequent Royal Hunt Cup hero Jimi Hendrix was too good for him in the Spring Cup at Newbury. Lattam has since scored again on the All-Weather at Newcastle in the Seaton Delaval Handicap with a nose success off 94. Again getting up in the final strides, he’s only been nudged up 1lb for that and may not be done improving either. Lattam looks like a leading contender.

Plenty that act on tacky ground will fancy their chances. Awaal is another son of Lope De Vega that should go well in first-time cheekpieces. This Simon and Ed Crisford trained four-year-old was runner-up in the Lincolnshire at Doncaster on reappearance off 3lb lower. That was on testing ground and the booking of Harry Davies, who takes 3lb off with his claim, effectively puts Awaal back on that mark.

He’s also hit the frame twice since, first behind the aforementioned Jimi Hendrix at Royal Ascot on completely different going. Awaal was also behind another Ralph Beckett horse in Biggles when keeping on into third in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket’s July Festival. This consistent type could well have a say in the finish once again back up in trip. Awaal is a solid each way option for punters.

Similar comments apply to last year’s unlucky runner-up Blue For You. One of six for trainer David O’Meara, who takes a scattergun approach to a race he’s won twice since 2020, this five-year-old New Approach gelding is 3lb well-in on future assignments despite a penalty. Blue For You has that for his recent York win, and the return to form means he’s worth considering.

Rhoscolyn looks set to be quickly turned out after landing a 7f handicap earlier in the meeting on Wednesday. Another of the O’Meara sextet, this five-year-old son of Territories has bounced back to form in recent days. Rhoscolyn built on a good second over an extended 7f at Beverley with a length victory here.

He wasn’t stopping at the line, so an extra furlong shouldn’t be an issue under Jason Hart, who has ridden two winners and seconds at this festival. It’s a big day for the jockey, who also partners Highfield Princess. Rhoscolyn can also outrun his odds and into the frame.

Highfield Princess, King George Qatar Stakes, Glorious Goodwood 2023 (4 August, 3:35)

Highfield Princess has been a model of consistency without winning as yet this season, but can cash in on an ease in grade and escapes a penalty for last year’s top level heroics in the feature 5f Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes on the Friday of Glorious Goodwood (3:35). Trained by John Quinn, this six-year-old Night Of Thunder mare is a feel good story for connections.

From run of the mill handicap to a Group 1 hat-trick, Highfield Princess is the kind of horse everyone dreams of owning. Third at this meeting two years ago in the Oak Tree Stakes for fellow females over further, she notched a notable treble last summer when landing the Prix Maurice de Gheest in France, Nunthorpe Stakes at York and Flying Five on Irish Champions Weekend.

If turning up in that form, then Highfield Princess wins this hands down. She top official ratings on a mark of 117 and placed in both Royal Ascot Group 1 sprints en route to the Glorious meeting. Given that the next best horse in the line-up is 110, this is a golden opportunity for her to resume winning ways.

Should the warm order fail to replicate her form, it’s anyone’s guess who will capitalise. The going at Goodwood is a question mark for Charlie Hills pair Equality and Equilateral. Recent York Listed winner Nymphadora doesn’t mind cut in the ground, however, and may outrun her odds. Trained by Andrew Balding, this four-year-old No Nay Never filly does have Ayr form to reverse with Makarova, but the going may help her.

Nymphadora scored on soft ground in a good Chester handicap earlier in the season. She also benefitted from rain during the John Smith’s Cup meeting last time out and landed the City Walls Stakes on the Knavesmire. If building on that effort, then Nymphadora can at least hit the frame.

Silky Wilkie was behind her when runner-up at York the last day and is another who could go well again. One of two in the race for trainer Karl Burke alongside White Lavender, this four-year-old son of Mehmas had to give Nymphadora 5lb on that occasion. Silky Wilkie is 2lb better off at the weights with 1 3/4 lengths to find.

He may well be able to at least get closer to the filly off the revised terms. Silky Wilkie landed the Scottish Sprint Cup at Musselburgh in April with some cut in the ground. That means he’ll handle conditions. Richard Kingscote now takes the ride with stable jockey Clifford Lee on White Lavender. Silky Wilkie is another to consider each way.

Hamish, Glorious Stakes, Glorious Goodwood 2023 (4 August, 4:10)

Soft ground and Group 3 company is a match made in heaven for Hamish, so the William Haggas winning machine at this level can strike in the grade for the sixth time at Goodwood in the 1m 4f Glorious Stakes on the penultimate day of the track’s marquee meeting. Owned by the trainer’s father, this seven-year-old Motivator gelding is excellent with some cut underfoot.

Hamish has already farm a couple of events at this level when landing the Ormonde Stakes at Chester and John Smith’s Silver Cup at York last month. Connections ambitiously declared him for the King George at Ascot last week, but the going quickened up and ruled him out. With attentions switched here instead, and Tom Marquand again aboard, Hamish just can’t be opposed.

While the market suggests the main danger comes from within the Haggas stable, Mimikyu may have conditions to suit. Trained by John and Thady Gosden for George Strawbridge, this four-year-old Dubawi filly has perhaps found the ground too fast for her on both starts this season so far.

Mimikyu won a Group 2 over the St Leger course and distance against fellow females at Doncaster last autumn. Like Hamish, then, she’s proven over further and not lacking stamina. As Mimikyu has more wins when the going description features soft than good, she should get closest to the favourite getting weight all-round.

Of the others, Candleford has a poor performance over course and distance to bounce back from last time out. Also trained by Haggas, this five-year-old son of Kingman got outpaced here in a Listed event on his return. The expectation is that Candleford will strip fitter for that, however, and a softer surface puts a greater emphasis on stamina.

On a form line through the winner, Peripatetic, he shouldn’t be able to beat Mimikyu, but Candleford did keep on nicely for third in the Group 3 Cumberland Lodge behind stable companion Hamish at Ascot in the autumn. Some punters may rightly feel that he’s worth one more chance in a renewal of the Glorious Stakes where the remainder need career bests just to hit the frame on ratings.

River Of Stars, Lillie Langtry Stakes, Glorious Goodwood 2023 (5 August, 3:00)

Ralph Beckett has a smart filly on his hands in River Of Stars and she can go one better than her second in France when taking on the boys back against her own sex for the 1m 6f Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes on the fifth and final day of Glorious Goodwood. This four-year-old daughter of Sea The Stars won the Chester Stakes last August.

Although then disappointing in the Park Hill, River Of Stars came out and reversed the form Mimikyu on reappearance in the Bronte Cup at York. She outbattled the runner-up to prevail by a head on quick ground. River Of Stars was then far from disgraced when chasing home The Good Man in the Prix Maurice de Nieuil at Longchamp.

Back in third was the Vicomtese Vigier scorer Sober, so the form has a good look to it. Now returned to fillies and mares only company, River Of Stars looks a value bet to add more Group success to her York win with Rossa Ryan back in the saddle and the yard enjoying winners here earlier in the week.

The Gosden yard has won this three times since 2016 and saddles two in their bid to enhance that record. Free Wind tops official ratings here under a penalty, but must bounce back from a poor run when a beaten favourite and fifth to Pyledriver at Royal Ascot. While this five-year-old Galileo mare perhaps didn’t enjoy the quick ground then, she had handled it before.

Free Wind has been pretty versatile as regards trip and sets the standard with three victories in this grade. They came in the 2021 Park Hill at this distance, last year’s Lancashire Oaks and over even sharper in the Middleton at York on reappearance. An easier surface and longer trip are no problem, but Free Wind is plenty short enough for a yard that has had some major reverses throughout the meeting.

At bigger odds, Luisa Casati might be a bit of each value. Trained in Lambourn by Tom Ward, this five-year-old daughter of Vadamos is a Listed course winner over 1m 4f on soft ground when landing the Daisy Warwick here in May. Luisa Casati wasn’t stopping on that occasion and is third best on official ratings.

Prior to that, she was just a short-neck behind The Good Man at Saint-Cloud. It tie her form closely to River Of Stars through the winner, then. Luisa Casati would probably be shorter if she was trained by a bigger stable; so, at double figure odds is the each way angle into this race.
