The Zhilei Zhang vs Joe Joyce rematch goes down this weekend, with the WBO Interim World Heavyweight Title on the line. Given that there is an interim title on the line, does that mean that the winner will become mandatory for a world title shot next? Read on to find out all you need to know.
Will The Zhang vs Joyce 2 Winner Fight For A World Title Next?
Joe Joyce aims to right the wrongs of the first fight with Zhilei Zhang this weekend, as the pair face-off for the second time in their heavyweight rematch at Wembley Arena on Saturday night.
First time around, it was the Chinese heavyweight powerhouse who claimed an upset victory, knocking ‘The Juggernaut’ out in the sixth round of the contest. Now, fast-forward six months and we have the rematch. ‘Big Bang’ aims to successfully defend his WBO Interim World Heavyweight Title – the belt he took off Joe Joyce last time out.
The British heavyweight had previously won the WBO Interim Title having beaten Joseph Parker. Whoever wins on Saturday night will have the belt put around their waist, and is also in an incredibly fruitful position going forward.
In fact, whoever wins on Saturday night will be in prime position for a world heavyweight title shot next year against the full WBO World Heavyweight Title holder – Oleksandr Usyk.
Being the interim champion means the full champion is either inactive or it means you are the mandatory challenger for the full title next. In this case, the winner of the Zhang vs Joyce 2 fight will be in a strong position to fight Oleksandr Usyk in the early stages of 2024.
As it looks like the Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk undisputed fight will never happen, the winner of Zhang vs Joyce 2 will be in pole position for a shot at world honours next year. Usyk has already dealt with his WBA mandatory in Daniel Dubois, so it could be the IBF or WBO mandatory next.
If it is indeed the WBO mandatory that is called, then the winner of Zhilei Zhang vs Joe Joyce 2 will get their shot at world heavyweight title glory next.
