Darwin Nunez had a decent start to the season but goals are quickly drying up for him. The Uruguayan is someone who misses more chances than he should score. Is he the true thorn in the Liverpool side?
Nunez stats
Since joining in 2022, Nunez has 21 goals in 64 appearances for Liverpool. Last season, Nunez nine goals from 14xG and it could be a similar situation for him again come the end of the season.
There’s been so many instances this season where Liverpool could have had more from a game if he was more clinical. Liverpool had a late chance against Luton at 0-0 that he should’ve buried from four yards but smacked it over the bar. The game ended 1-1 but it should’ve been more for the Reds if Nunez had scored the easy chance.
The game before that he scored an unbelievable goal against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup which sums him up as a striker.
The open goal miss against Toulouse was embarrassing considering the wonderful build-up play that he had started.
Liverpool needed him to perform against Manchester United but he seemed more interested in fighting with the United players than finishing chances.
What does Jurgen Klopp do with Nunez?
Nunez is probably beyond the point of patience. All Liverpool and Klopp can do now is stick with him and hope that they can get the best out of him in the remaining games.
Arguably Liverpool’s deadliest striker is Diogo Jota but he is injured for the foreseeable future. Cody Gakpo is clearly a talented finisher but he can’t translate the form he has in the Netherlands team to the Liverpool squad.
Luis Diaz is a gifted winger but he lacks a goalscoring quality that Liverpool had with Sadio Mane. Mohamed Salah is still Liverpool’s go-to-man for goals but he’s starting to become less involved in games. Give him a chance and he’ll still score it but he lacks the major impact and the ability to turn a game around that he possessed three or four years ago.
What’s next for Nunez?
Liverpool’s number nine will have chances to redeem himself with two major games coming up for Liverpool. They host West Ham in the Carabao Cup quarter-final before welcoming Arsenal in a game that’ll decide who’ll be top at Christmas.
