Why Is Frankie Dettori NOT Riding At The Newmarket July Festival This Week?

Frankie Dettori will NOT be in action at this week’s Newmarket July Festival due to receiving an eight-day whip ban – meaning the popular Italian jockey won’t be winning Saturday’s July Cup – a Group One race that had eluded Dettori over the years.

Frankie Dettori Picked Up A Whip Ban For His Ride On Inspiral In The Queen Anne Stakes

Frankie Dettori will NOT be in action at this week’s July Festival at Newmarket after the popular Italian pilot picked up an 8-day whip ban for his ride on Inspiral in the Queen Anne Stakes (20th June) at Royal Ascot last month (watch below).

During that ride on Inspiral, Frankie Dettori used the whip seven times, which is one over the allotted six times allowed on the flat. This meant a 4-day ban, but as the race was a Group One the penalty is doubled to 8 days.

Dettori, who is riding in his last season, also received a 9-day careless riding ban at the Royal Meeting with his ride on the King’s Saga in the Wolferton Stakes, which ran from July 4-12.

However, the extra whip ban kicks in between July 13th-15th and also 17th-21st July – meaning he’ll miss the three-day Newmarket July Festival (13th-15th) in his hometown this week.

The ban is an added blow as Frankie Dettori was hoping to try and win the Group One July Cup on Saturday on Kinross – the British Group One race that has eluded Frankie over his 30+ year career.

Frankie Dettori had also won ALL the other six Group races at the Newmarket July Festival over the years – including 7 wins in the Bahrain Trophy and 5 in both the July Stakes and Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes.

Oisin Murphy Will Also Miss The Newmarket July Festival With A Ban

As well as Frankie Dettori, the other big name set to miss this week’s July Festival at Newmarket is Oisin Murphy. He is also banned for a whip offence that saw him strike Valiant King 7 times in the King George V Stakes – ruling him out between July 11th-15th and 17th-19th.

This ban will rule Oisin Murphy out of the ride on July Cup favourite Shaquille, who he steered to win the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot last month.
