The Manchester United youngster made the bench for the Red Devils loss to Fulham on Saturday – but who is Toby Collyer?

Toby Collyer Background

Born in January 2004, Collyer joined Manchester United from Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer of 2022.

The midfielder was born in Worthing just down the road from Brighton and appeared regularly in the Seagulls Under-18 and Under-23 squads before making the move up north.

Before moving to Manchester United, Collyer captained England at Under-16 and Under-17 level on multiple occasions.

Over the summer the 20-year-old was included in the Red Devils’ matchday squad for their preseason opener against Leeds United, but he did not make it onto the pitch.

According to Transfermarkt, this season, Collyer has made 15 appearances at youth level for Manchester United, contributing 1 assist.

Toby Collyer Style Of Play

Upon his move to Manchester United from Brighton, Collyer was described as a team player with a strong work ethic by former coach Mark Beard.

“He is a pleasure to coach. He is so low maintenance, what I mean by that is you don’t know he is there. He gets on with his job. He regularly put in displays of 8/10 at the least. He had the best running stats, runs 13 kilometres a game, breaks things up. He is so unassuming, he gets on with his job.

“You want 11 of these type of players in the team. You know what you’re going to get in training, he works hard, he wants to improve, he’s intelligent. He’s a good all-round kid.”

Ten Hag On Collyer

Amid an injury crisis at Manchester United, Collyer made the bench for Manchester United’s Premier League fixture against Fulham on Saturday.

The Red Devils lost the game 2-1 and Collyer did not make an appearance, but boss Erik ten Hag certainly seems to rate the midfielder.

Speaking to MUTV before the game, Ten Hag said: “He showed some good stuff and he showed some potential. And so we have some problems. But yeah, it’s, for him, an opportunity to be involved.

“He has to be ready to come on because you are on the bench to come on.”
