For the first time ever 32 teams will line-up to compete for the Women’s World Cup as the tournament expands from 24 nations, with the likes of Portugal, Zambia and Ireland making their debuts.
Tournament favourites USA are inevitably handed the shortest price given their recent monopoly over this tournament – they have won four of the eight total iterations including the previous two, and are vying to become the first nation to lift the trophy three times in a row.
Elsewhere, Germany are the next-best in terms of their history in this competition, having won two successive World Cups in 2003 and 2007. Although they have since failed to reach another final, they finished fourth in Canada eight years ago, and were runners-up at the Euros last year.
Speaking of the Euros, England managed to end the Germans 100% record across their eight Euro finals last summer to lift their first ever piece of major silverware.
A breakthrough year for the Lionesses also saw them make light work of Brazil in the Finalissima, and a star-studded squad features some of the best players in the world including recent Champions League-winning Barcelona duo Lucy Bronze and Keira Walsh.
They will be all too familiar with the threat that Spain pose however, and although they are yet to secure a quarter-final berth across their two appearances at the World Cup so far, they will be enthused by the return of two-time Ballon D’or winner Alexia Putellas, who missed their Euros campaign this time last year.
Other interesting outsiders include Sweden, who have finished third in two of the last three tournaments, while joint-hosts Australia will hope to use their home advantage to reach the final four for the first time, having been three-time quarter-finalists between 2007 and 2015.
