Aston Villa’s Conference League opponents this evening are Zrinjski Mostar, but to many – they’ll be an unknown entity. So ahead of the clash at Villa Park, just who are the Villans’ counterparts?

Zrinjski is a football club based in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and ply their trade in the country’s top flight – the Premijer Liga, currently occupying fourth place in the 12 team league.

Nicknamed Plemići, which translates to ‘The Nobles’, they are one of the most decorated clubs in Bosnia and hold the record for the most amount of league titles won (8), three more than Željezničar Sarajevo who have won the second most (5).

Managed by Krunoslav Rendulić, Zrinjski became the first Bosnian football club to ever qualify for the group stages of a European competition, narrowly losing out to Austrian side LASK in the Europa League play-off which saw them drop into the Conference League group stages.

They almost secured their place in the groups last season too, but to be eliminated from the Conference League play-off round in an agonising penalty shootout defeat to Slovan Bratislava.

Notable Current & Former Players

Club-captain Nemanja Bilbija is without a doubt Zrinjski’s standout player, having scored 31 goals in all competitions last season – he already has 10 to his name in 2023/24. The 32-year-old has spent the majority of his career in Bosnia and surrounding countries such as Serbia and Croatia, but enjoyed a brief spell in China with Gangwon, whilst also earning four caps for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Tomislav Kis, formerly of Dinamo Zagreb, Hajduk Split, Cercle Brugge and Seongnam FC, is another to keep an eye on. The Croatian attacker has six goals and two assists to his name in just 15 appearances thus far this term, and was introduced from the bench in their opening group match against AZ Alkmaar.

A very notable former Zrinjski player is that of former Balon d’Or winner Luka Modric. The Real Madrid midfielder made his professional debut for the club as a 17-year-old whilst on loan from Dinamo Zagreb in 2003/04, and quickly became their star player scoring eight goals across 25 appearances – a return that saw him named the league’s player of the year.
