A point is all that is required this evening is Spain to secure their spot at next summer’s Euros, but when was the last time Scotland qualified for a major tournament?

The Last Time Scotland Qualified For a Major Tournament

The agony of missing out on last winter’s World Cup in Qatar sparked knee-jerk criticism from the Scottish fanbase, who were left to stew on another missed opportunity.

That meek performance against Ukraine, where they fell to a 3-1 play-off defeat, condemned them to at least a 27 year wait until another potential World Cup appearance.

It was a bitter end to a qualification process that began with so much promise. Off the back of their most recent major tournament appearance at Euro 2020 – their first in 23 years – the next step was to secure their spot at the biggest competition of them all.

The Tartan Army will still hold fond memories of that Euros campaign, with their defining moment coming in a home nations stalemate at Wembley where they held eventual finalists England to a goalless draw.

Defeats on their home turf against Croatia and latterly the Czech Republic condemned to yet another early group stage exit however.

What Do Scotland Need to Qualify For Euro 2024?

While the wait for another shot at the World Cup is put on the back-burner, their full attention will be fixed on sealing qualification for Euro 2024.

Their ticket to Germany next summer will be confirmed this evening if they can hold Spain to at least a point. They beat La Roja 2-0 at Hampden Park in March earlier this year.

However, if Norway fail to beat Cyprus on Thursday, Scotland will qualify regardless of their result in Seville.
