Although the summer window shuts for the vast majority of European clubs this week, there has been lots of talk surrounding the Saudi Pro League’s deadline. With that in mind, we are here to provide a little clarity by posing the question – when does the transfer window shut in Saudi Arabia?
When Does the Transfer Window Shut in Saudi Arabia?
Clubs in the Premier League and across Europe are free to do business up until this Friday (September 1st), with England and Spain’s cut-off set at 6pm GMT, while France, Germany and Italy all conclude at varying times throughout the day.
This is standard practice and has been for some time, so no surprises here.
However, whathat has been the cause of discussion is Saudi Arabia, and how long the rapidly emerging Pro League can continue infiltrating Europe’s top talent for this summer.
With more than $500 million spent by Saudi clubs throughout the window, the futures of many players in Europe will still be called into question beyond September 1st.
Although Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp bemoaned the pressure caused by a near-three week gap between Europe’s deadline and Saudi’s transfer window, there has been some confusion over the actual date.
FIFA has it listed as the 20th September, hence the conversation swirling about the media at the time of writing.
Associations are, however, allowed to stick with a date within a timeframe. The Saudi Football Federation’s official website states a different date for the registration of players, with teams needing to complete their business by September 7th.
Klopp’s argument that the Saudi league is now ‘a competitor’ is still relevant in that case, with the Pro League allowed to complete transfers a full week after Europe’s top five divisions.
