Indian Wells is well underway with the Round of 128 kicking off this week, and with the first Masters 1000 event often serving as as a precursor for Grand Slam winners to test themselves against the very best, the excitement is palpable for the biggest ever edition of this tournament. Organisers and sponsors have had to increase the stakes as a result, so we are taking a look at the Indian Wells prize money breakdown for 2023.
Often coined as tennis‘ “fifth Slam”, Indian Wells has risen to prominence amongst the tour’s heavyweights as they prepare for the summer’s major double-header, with the French Open first of all at the end of May, before Wimbledon gets underway at the beginning of July.
Unlike other dates on the tennis calendar, this open represents equal prize money for both women and men across the singles tournament, while as is customary across the year, doubles competitors receive slightly less.
Although the rewards have increased year-on-year over the past decade, the tournament has attempted to focus more of the total pool on qualifiers and first-round competitors, with the later receiving $18,660; a 2.53% increase.
All-in-all, there has been a near-90% rise in the total prize money at Indian Wells over the last 10 years.

What is the Indian Wells Prize Money Pool For 2023?
In total, players will be competing the highest ever prize money pool seen in California, with $17,600,000 up for grabs. Of course, this is split all the way across each round of the tournament, with losers in the qualifying round, all the way to the eventual runner-up receiving a share.
This means each tour plays for a slice of $8,800,000 in total prize money, and the total figure represents a 5.27% increase on last year in accordance with the growing prestige of the ‘Grand Slam in the West’.
What is the Prize Money For the Singles Winners?

Elsewhere, second-place will still be handsomely rewarded for their efforts and can expect to receive around half that amount with $662,360.
What is the Prize Money For the Doubles Winners?
$436,730 is the winning purse for the doubles tournament, which of course is split between the winning pair. In comparison, this is considerably less than the singles event due to lower viewing figures and a drop in ticket sales, and stands at around five times less.
