What Belts Are On The Line In The Jake Paul vs Tommy Fury Fight?

Just this week the WBC announced that there will indeed be a belt on the line, albeit commemorative. The WBC ‘Diriyah Champion’ belt awarded the winner of Sunday’s fight will be the first time both Paul and Fury have competed for a title, although fans on Twitter have been quick to mock what is essentially a meaningless token.

However, perhaps more importantly, the WBC have also confirmed that a world ranking is up for grabs for the victor, with a chance to move into the cruiserweight division.

This represents a golden opportunity for both competitors to fast-track their way into contention for bigger fights, and with a top 40 place on the line, the stakes could not be higher for Paul and Fury who remain in boxing infancy at this moment in time.

Jake Paul is yet to face a fully-fledged professional boxer in his six bouts up to this point, and Tommy Fury is undefeated across his eight fights at the age of 23, although the younger brother of two-time world champion Tyson is yet to face anyone of real calibre.

Mauricio Sulaiman, the president of the WBC, said: “The WBC ranks 40 fighters in each weight category, the performance in such fight, by both fighters, will determine the evaluation of the ratings committee.

“I had provided my opinion before Jake Paul’s last fight and the WBC ratings committee did not rate him after his win versus Silva. Now that he will fight Tommy Fury, who is an established boxer, it becomes possible to rate him.”

Should either Paul or Fury manage to move up the rankings and make it into the prestigious ‘top 15’, they would more than likely be in the running for a world title fight.

The undercard for this evening also includes a much anticipated WBC world title bout for the division they will be vying to rank for, with Ilunga Makabu putting his belt on the line against Badou Jack.
