The latest West Ham transfer update from the Hammers tells us that they are NOT interested in getting former player Jesse Lingard back, with Sunderland’s Jack Clarke and former Spurs man Steven Bergwijn their new preferred targets.
West Ham’s Injury Crisis and Absentee List Continues To Grow
West Ham have made a decent start to their 2023/24 Premier League campaign as just over the halfway stage the Hammers sit sixth in the table with 34 points – winning 50% of those matches.
Plus, last season’s UEFA Europa Conference League champs have also made a good start in the Europa League, winning five times this term.
However, with a busy spell on the horizon, that sees an FA Cup replay and the return to European football, West Ham will need their squad to be firing on all cylinders.
The bad news to David Moyes and co is that there’s a big danger of the West Ham ‘bubble’ bursting with a string of injuries and key players missing due to the AFCON.
Lucas Paqueta will be gone for two months due to a calf problem, Mohamed Kudus is away for at least 2-3 weeks at the AFCON with Ghana, while Jarrod Bowen is nursing an ankle injury which could see him out for up to three weeks.
If you also add in Michail Antonio still nursing a knee injury, then it’s clear why West Ham transfer updates are popping up in the news most days in January.
West Ham Transfer Update Sees Jesse Lingard Off The Table
Earlier this week, free agent Jesse Lingard had been rumoured to be making a return to West Ham. The former Red Devil had been on loan with the Hammers during the 2020/21 season, making 16 appearances and netting nine goals.
Lingard (31) was also spotted at the West Ham training ground recently as the former Forest man is out of contract and looking for a new club.
The ex-England player has also been frustrating the likes of Ally McCoist and Paul Scholes this week – with both saying he’s ‘wasting his talent‘.
However, despite the obvious links back, West Ham have come out and RULED OUT a Lingard return – instead they want to focus their attentions on Sunderland’s Jack Clarke and former Tottenham and now Ajax player Steven Bergwijn.
West Ham Transfer Targets Are Jack Clarke and Steven Bergwijn
23 year-old Jack Clarke came to Sunderland from Spurs back in 2022 and the English winger has impressed the Black Cat faithful since.
Clark, who had been sold to Spurs from Leeds for £8.5m back in 2019, has fired in 21 league goals from his 71 appearances for Sunderland.
The other West Ham transfer target – Steven Bergwijn (26) – will be known to Premier League fans with his time at Spurs between 2020 and 2022, where made 25 league appearances and scored seven goals.
Bergwijn moved to Ajax for £28m in July 2022 and has also been in top form for the Dutch side – scoring 19 times from his 41 appearances.
West Ham’s Next Fixtures Sees Hammers Face Bristol City In The FA Cup
With no Premier League game for the Hammers this weekend, the next stop for West Ham will be a trip to Bristol City on Tuesday 16th January for an FA Cup Third Round replay.
After that, they will face Sheffield United away in the league on Sunday 21st January.
