To get you in the mood for their mouthwatering Premier League clash, which could well set the tone for the title race, we’ve ranked the top 10 goals in Arsenal vs Liverpool history.
Being two of the Premier League’s biggest football clubs, there have been many iconic moments in matches between Liverpool and Arsenal.
Who can forget Michael Thomas’ winner at Anfield in 1989 to clinch Arsenal the title? – a moment only really matched by Sergio Aguero’s late 2012 winner.
Arsenal vs Liverpool is a fixture synonymous with goals, and even today, it rarely disappoints. So let’s take a look at our top 10 goals in matches between the two historic clubs.
Top 10 Arsenal vs Liverpool Goals
Honourable mentions: Mo Salah (Liverpool 3-1 Arsenal, August 2019); Joe Willock (Liverpool 5-5 Arsenal, November 2019); Steven Gerrard (Liverpool 4-0 Arsenal, December 2010)
10. Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal 2-0 Liverpool, November 2013)
Kicking off our list is Aaron Ramsey’s wonderful half-volley in Arsenal’s 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium during the 2013/14 campaign.
The Welshman enjoyed his best-scoring season here, notching 16 goals across all competitions for the Gunners, culminating with the winner in the FA Cup final against Hull City.
9. Andrey Arshavin (Liverpool 4-4 Arsenal, April 2009)
Next up, and how could we not include this? With the game tied at 3-3, Arsenal broke on the counter, led by Theo Walcott and supported by the oncoming Andrey Arshavin, who demonstrated almost superhuman speed.
It might not have even been the pick of the bunch during the game in terms of the actual quality of the goal, but it’s the celebration that makes it.
Liverpool would go on to equalise through Yossi Benayoun to round off an incredible eight-goal thriller at Anfield.
8. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Liverpool 5-5 Arsenal, October 2019)
This one perhaps goes under the radar, with it being a League Cup game, but the fourth-round tie in the 2019/20 season was one of the most fun to watch.
Joe Willock and Divock Origi’s corkers could have quite easily made the list, but we’re giving Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s rocket against his old club the edge.
Liverpool would go on to win the game on penalties after Caoimhin Kelleher saved Dani Ceballos’ decisive penalty.
7. Mesut Ozil (Arsenal 3-3 Liverpool, December 2017)
Mesut Ozil’s time at Arsenal splits opinion, but there’s no doubt surrounding his ability. At his best, he was magnificent to watch. He was capable of truly magical moments at times, and this was one of his finest in an Arsenal shirt.
The Gunners had just pulled the game back to 2-2 after going 2-0 down, before Ozil clipped the ball over the Liverpool goalkeeper following a neat one-two with Alexandre Lacazette.
It initially seemed that Ozil chipped the ball, but closer replays show that he actually trapped the ball against the grass with his in-step – a technique that became synonymous with him.
6. Roberto Firmino (Liverpool 5-1 Arsenal, December 2018)
Roberto Firmino used to relish playing against Arsenal. With 11 goals in 15 league appearances against the Gunners, no Liverpool player has scored more against them.
Selecting his best one proved quite difficult, but we had to go with this one, where he quite frankly humiliated three Arsenal defenders before effortlessly slotting the ball past Bernd Leno.
Arsenal had actually taken the lead in this game, but their lead lasted less than three minutes. The Reds won the game 5-1 in the end, with Firmino scoring a hat-trick.
5. Sadio Mane (Arsenal 3-4 Liverpool, August 2016)
On his Liverpool debut, Sadio Mane produced a special goal. After picking up the ball near the byline, Mane blitzed past Calum Chambers before cutting inside, beating Nacho Monreal, and smashing it into the far corner, leaving Petr Cech out of reach.
The goal actually put the Reds 4-1 up at the Emirates before Arsene Wenger’s side fought back to reduce the deficit to one.
4. Philippe Coutinho (Arsenal 3-4 Liverpool, August 2016)
Earlier in the same game, Philippe Coutinho scored an incredible free-kick from range to put Liverpool 1-0 up. The Brazilian produced many special goals during his time at Liverpool before his mega-money move to Barcelona.
Coutinho is arguably one of the Premier League’s finest ever free-kick takers, or at least for Liverpool. The midfield maestro scored five free-kicks during his time in England.
3. Robin van Persie (Liverpool 1-2 Arsenal, March 2012)
Arsenal snatched a rare win at Anfield in 2012 after coming from 1-0 down to win the game, thanks to a superb volley by Robin van Persie.
Van Persie is without doubt one of the Premier League’s best ever strikers, and he was at the peak of his powers during the 2011/12 season before his switch to Manchester United.
What deserves as much credit as this strike though, is the height and weight of the pass my Alex Song, which tees Van Persie up perfectly to deliver a trademark left-footed volley – one eerily similar to his title-winning goal against Aston Villa for United.
2. Neil Mellor (Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal, November 2004)
Despite only playing 22 times for the club, Neil Mellor certainly left his mark at Liverpool. The former striker has plenty of memorable moments to look back on, but none more so than his last-minute cracker against Arsenal in 2004.
With virtually the last kick of the game, Mellor blasted the ball on the half-volley from 25 yards to beat Jens Lehmann in the Arsenal goal.
1. Thierry Henry (Arsenal 4-2, Liverpool, April 2004)
Topping our list is Thierry Henry’s remarkable solo goal against Liverpool at the tail end of the 2003/04 Invincibles season.
With the game tied at 2-2, Arsenal searched for a winner. ‘The King’ dropped deep to receive the ball, turned, and took matters into his own hands, going on an incredible solo run that left both Didi Hamman and Jamie Carragher spinning.
It was his second of the game, and he would eventually complete his hat-trick late on to give the Gunners a 4-2 victory.
