Ex-Watford owner and global superstar Elton John appeared as a guest on That Peter Crouch Podcast and discussed his regrets as he watched his beloved Watford FC lose the FA Cup Final to Everton in 1984.

When Did Elton John’s Watford Reach The FA Cup Final ?

A lifelong supporter of Watford, Elton John became chairman of the club in 1976 and appointed future England boss Graham Taylor in 1977.

Within seven years of Taylor’s appointment, Watford had climbed from bottom place in the lowest division of The Football League to top position in the highest division.

Further success followed and Watford reached the FA Cup Final in 1984 where they lost 2-0 to Everton, with Elton John stepping down as chairman in 2002.

What Did Elton John Say About Watford’s FA Cup Final On That Peter Crouch Podcast?

Having lost the FA Cup Final in 1984, Elton John discussed his regrets on the day on the That Peter Crouch Podcast.

Speaking to hosts Peter Crouch, Chris Stark and Steve Sidwell, Elton John said: “I was very emotional. Too emotional probably.

“What I regret about the cup final was, in my career you get more moments than a footballer does of playing huge events and having to pull them off. Like Madison Square Garden, Dodger Stadium, Glastonbury. I’ve had so many in my life.”

John continued: “As a footballer you don’t get that very often, you don’t get to a cup final very often, you don’t win the Premier League very often. What I regret now is not saying to Graham [Taylor] ‘let me go in there and chat to them.’

“‘I would have gone in there and said ‘listen, this is such a big thing for us, you can win this. Don’t let it go. This is maybe your only chance to get this. We’ve got the players to do it. Dont freeze!'”

“I think what happened on that day, we just thought it was enough for us to be there.”
