Following Mason Holgate’s horror tackle on Kaoru Mitoma, we’ve decided to take a look at some of the worst challenges in the Premier League this season. Watch them all here.
Watch The Worst Tackles From The 23/24 Premier League Season
Mason Holgate (Sheffield United) Vs Brighton
Mason Holgate was sent off on his Premier League debut for Sheffield United after a horrific tackle on Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma.
With the ball there to be won, the former Everton defender charged into the challenge, catching the Japan international at thigh level.
Holgate was given a yellow card in open play before a VAR review correctly changed the decision to a red.

Malo Gusto (Chelsea) Vs Aston Villa
With the scores level in an early season clash between Chelsea and Aston Villa, Blues full-back Malo Gusto flew into a challenge with France compatriot Lucas Digne.
On first look, the challenge looked clean, albeit full-blooded, and Gusto was given a yellow card.
However, on closer inspection by VAR, Gusto could be seen planting his studs halfway up Digne’s calf and the decision of a yellow card was, quite rightly, overturned to a red.

Malo Gusto (Chelsea) Vs Fulham
Gusto, who evidently feels the need to live up to his name, makes his second appearance on this list with another horrific tackle, this time on Fulham winger, Willian.
With the scores tied at 0-0, the French full-back lost control of the ball and crashed into the Brazilian winger in an attempt to rectify his mistake.
Once again, Gusto’s studs could be seen planted halfway up his opponent’s leg, but somehow the 20-year-old escaped with just a yellow card, much to the dismay of the Fulham players.

Curtis Jones (Liverpool) Vs Tottenham
In an early season clash between title contenders Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, Curtis Jones is involved in an eerily similar challenge to Malo Gusto’s previous entry.
With the scores at 0-0 in the 26th minute, Jones overran the ball and clattered into Spurs midfielder Yves Bissouma with his studs up.
With Bissouma’s foot firmly planted to the ground, the Malian miraculously came away from the incident relatively unscathed.
Jones was given a yellow card by referee Simon Hooper before a VAR review overturned the decision to a deserved red.

Cristian Romero (Tottenham) Vs Chelsea
With Tottenham 1-0 up after a Dejan Kulusevski strike against Chelsea, the Blues looked to have equalised midway through the first half via Moises Caicedo.
However, after a lengthy review with multiple incidents checked, the goal was ruled out for offside.
Incredibly, the game was pulled back for a penalty in the build-up and Spurs centre-back Cristian Romero was sent off for a horror challenge on Pape Mate Sarr.
Chelsea talisman Cole Palmer converted the spot-kick before another Spurs red card for Destin Udogie and a hat-trick from Nicolas Jackson resulted in a 4-1 win for Chelsea.

Raul Jiminez (Wolves) Vs Newcastle
Fulham travelled up north for this pre-Christmas clash against Newcastle United, but after 22 minutes the Cottagers would’ve been wishing they’d stayed at home.
With the scores still level at 0-0, Raul Jiminez jumped to block a Sean Longstaff pass. However, in one of the most ridiculous Premier League challenges in living memory, the Mexican used his momentum to fly into the midfielder at chest height.
Thankfully Longstaff was ok and capable of playing the full 90 minutes, but the Mexican striker received his marching orders for the reckless challenge.
