Union Berlin vs Real Madrid Report: Dani Ceballos Secures Late Turnaround For Los Blancos

Real Madrid had already confirmed their position as group C winners in the Champions League ahead of their match with Union Berlin this week, but they made no mistake still winning against their Bundesliga opponent deep into added time.

It was Union Berlin who took an unexpected lead in the first half in Germany, with Madrid going a goal behind just before half time thanks to a Kevin Volland finish in stoppage time.

Joselu and Real Madrid didn’t need long to get going in the second half though, with the Spanish striker netting an equaliser just 15 minutes into the second half to restore parity for the visitors.

The Madrid talisman completed his brace in almost no time at all, with his second header of the match turning the game on its head within the space of ten minutes – putting Madrid firmly back in control off the game.

There was plenty more drama to come in Germany though as Union Berlin refused to go down without a fight, with the Bundesliga relegation candidates  scoring an equaliser with just five minutes left normal time.

Alex Karl managed to restore hope of Europa League qualification for the hosts with just minutes left to play, with a long range strike stunning the visitors and sending Olympiastadion Berlin into delirium.

The Champions League is Real Madrid’s competition though and they certainly weren’t going to end their group stage with a draw, as Dani Ceballos stepped up to hand Carlo Ancelotti’s side a late victory.

What Next For Real Madrid & Union Berlin?

Union Berlin crash out of all Europe competitions after the loss, with the Bundesliga side finishing their Champions League campaign rock bottom of their group behind Braga, Napoli and Real Madrid.

Madrid on the other hand enter the knockout stages as a top seed, with the last 16 draw taking place on Monday night.
