Football fans have reacted on Twitter/X following Newcastle’s disappointing exit from the Champions League and they are revelling in it.
Newcastle’s Champions League Exit
Heading into Newcastle’s final Champions League Group stage fixture against AC Milan, the Magpies needed to take the 3-points, while relying on Borussia Dortmund to prevent PSG from winning in the other fixture from Group F.
The night got off to the perfect start for Eddie Howe’s side after Joelinton latched onto a Lewis Miley pass in the AC Milan box, before sending a piledriving shot into the top corner of Mike Maignan’s net.
The scores remained the same until the 59th minute when a Rafael Leao cross bundled around the Newcastle United box before making its way to Christian Pulisic, who stabbed the ball home from close range.
With the scores still level in the Dortmund-PSG game, both sides desperately sought out a winner. Bruno Guimaraes’ long-range effort was tipped onto the bar in what has to be considered a wonder save from Maignan, before Rafael Leao’s one on one effort hit the post.
As the game drew to a close, AC Milan broke on the counter with Noah Okafor playing an inch perfect pass through to Samuel Chukwueze for the Nigerian to sweep home past Martin Dubravka in the Newcastle goal.
With the game finishing 2-1 to AC Milan and PSG holding onto a draw with Borussia Dortmund, the French club progress through to the Champions League knockout stages, while Milan drop into the Europa League with the Magpies crashing out of Europe altogether.
