Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract is set to run out by 2025 but talks have been opened by Liverpool to extend the contract of the homegrown talent.
Following the departures of Jordan Henderson and James Milner, Virgil Van Dijk was given the captain’s armband whilst Alexander-Arnold took the vice captain position. A proud moment not just for his friends and family but for the Liverpool supporters to see one of their own taking leadership responsibilities once again.
Alexander-Arnold has led Liverpool wearing the captain’s armband this season against Aston Villa at Anfield. The Reds won 3-0.
Extending Alexander-Arnold’s contract will be Liverpool’s main priority until January where they’ll look to recruit more players to increase that squad depth that’s been lacking at times. It’s not yet known how the long the extension will be.
Alexander-Arnold has come under scrutiny a lot for his defensive capabilities and errors that have led to goals being conceded. There is, however, no doubt about his passing ability and creating chances for the Liverpool forwards to latch onto.
Jurgen Klopp has been pushing Alexander-Arnold to a makeshift midfield role to make it easier for him to pick out passes and to create more chances.
Alexander-Arnold was missing from the September England camp and the Liverpool squad on Saturday in the 3-1 win against Wolves due to an injury.
Other Liverpool players like Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara have a year left on their contract. It’s unclear at this moment in time whether contract negotiations are taking place to extend their contracts.
