Denny McCarthy sets -10 clubhouse target after low-scoring first round in Connecticut

McCarthy carded a phenomenal, bogey-free 60 with ten birdies at TPC River Highlands to finish round one as the outright leader – two shots clear of Keegan Bradley and Adam Scott in a tie for second.

Scottie Scheffler is three shots behind and the strong betting favourite as it stands, with Shane Lowry and Patrick Cantlay also delivering promising performances on Thursday.

Some surprises included a four-over-par 74 for Collin Morikawa who now faces an uphill battle to make the cut alongside Max Homa (+2).

Rory McIlroy, Wyndham Clark, Xander Schauffele are amongst the names at two-under and are still very much alive heading into Friday’s second round on the East Coast.

It’s actually quite surprising that it took McIlroy this long to secure a first hole-in-one of his professional career on the PGA Tour, but good things come to those who wait in an eventful first round for the Irishman.

The world number three’s ace on the par-three eighth hole coupled with five birdies and bogeys each marked an up-and-down day as he seeks to bounce back from heartbreak at the US Open last week.
