Karim Benzema’s chances of a Premier League move are extremely tough because of his high status level in the Saudi Pro League.
The former Real Madrid star is being linked with Chelsea and Manchester United, as the Frenchman seems to be reconsidering his decision to join Al-Ittihad last summer.
However, the 36-year-old has been one of the superstar signings Saudi Arabia, which combined with his mammoth wages, could make a transfer away this month look very difficult.
Chelsea are on the lookout for a short-term forward option this month and would snap up the chance to sign someone of Benzema’s pedigree.
Yet even the Blues would struggle to work out the financials around signing the French international, who is understood to earn extortionate sums that could not be matched anywhere in Europe.
When the 2022 Balon D’or winner made his move to Al-Ittihad, it was reported that he would earn £86million-per-season.
He is one of the Saudi Pro League poster boys alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar, meaning there has currently been no sign of an agreed exit.
Benzema has 12 goals for Al-Ittihad and the 36-year-old forward would definitely boost the season for Chelsea or Manchester United if he arrived.
Chelsea’s stance on the situation could still depend on Christopher Nkunku’s fitness issues being resolved, while United have been on the lookout for a low-cost loan striker who could offer plenty of experience.
Benzema definitely ticks the experienced box, but is not at the level of financing that would give them much chance of a deal – especially as there is no desire in Saudi Arabia for him to leave.
