In a shocking turn of events, Italy’s national football team has been plunged into disarray as Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali and Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo were sent home from the national camp due to alleged betting breaches.

Both players were subjected to questioning by the police regarding their involvement in alleged betting violations, as reported by ANSA. Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagiolo has also come under scrutiny for placing bets on illegal platforms.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has swiftly confirmed the departure of both Tonali and Zaniolo from the Italy squad. It’s a major setback just ahead of the crucial Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and England.

In an official statement, the FIGC revealed, “The Federation announces that, in the late afternoon of today, the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Turin has notified investigative acts to footballers Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Zaniolo, currently meeting with the national team at the Federal Technical Center of Coverciano.”

They further expressed their belief that the players, regardless of the allegations, were not in the necessary condition to face their upcoming commitments, prompting the decision to allow them to return to their respective club sides.

The allegations against both players revolve around breaches of betting regulations. For instance, it has been reported that Zaniolo placed bets on Roma’s Coppa Italia matches while he was part of the matchday squad, as disclosed by Fabrizio Romano. These allegations have raised concerns over the players’ eligibility in UEFA and FIFA affiliated competitions should they be found guilty.

In response to the ongoing investigation, both Tonali and Zaniolo will now rejoin their respective club sides. Italy, on the other hand, will proceed with their fixtures. They face Malta in Bari before travelling to Wembley Stadium to play England.
