Seven Tingle Creek entries remain in the 2022 renewal of the Grade 1 Sandown steeplechase over almost 2m. Unseasonably good ground means this famous horse race, first run in 1969 and renamed after the Esher track specialist a decade later, may cut up further at final declarations.

Tingle Creek Entries 2022 – Our Runners Guide
Small field sizes have become the norm in this contest with only one renewal since 2014 seeing eight run. The Tingle Creek Chase has been won by some of the best in the business over fences down the years.
What makes this year’s edition different is the forecast ground. The going contains good in its description, something almost unheard of in December for Sandown Park. Those seven Tingle Creek entries may not all run then, but SportsLens experts profile them all anyway…
Captain Guinness
- Age: 7
- BHA Rating: 160
- Jockey: Rachael Blackmore
- Trainer: Henry De Bromhead
- Form: 12B/P12F3/U13316-41
- Tingle Creek Odds: 12/1 with 10bet
Last year’s third, Captain Guinness, has the option of coming over from Ireland for this race again. On that run, this raider from the Emerald Isle has almost six lengths to find with Greaneteen. The form of a reappearance win in the Grade 2 Fortria Chase at Navan posted by Captain Guinness has already taken a major hit, however.
That’s because the runner-up, Riviere D’Etel, trailed in last of four when sent off odds-on in a Listed contest for mares at Carlisle last Sunday. Captain Guinness is a useful type but lacking the class to make his presence felt at this elite level. Connections may wait and go for the Hilly Way Chase at Cork the following weekend instead.
Dunvegan
- Age: 9
- BHA Rating: 162
- Jockey: Bryan Cooper
- Trainer: Pat Fahy
- Jumps Form: 221621/10P/3132/4PP36/39112-
- Tingle Creek Odds: 22/1 with 10bet
As a horse that only ever won races going right-handed, the clockwise track at Sandown should suit Dunvegan. His lofty official rating is mainly based on winning valuable Fairyhouse handicaps last winner, but his subsequent second in the Dublin Chase at Leopardstown was a career best.
Dunvegan’s mark forces wily trainer Pat Fahy to look at these conditions races. He trailed in a dozen lengths behind Chacun Pour Soi at the Dublin Racing Festival but had potentially re-opposing rivals Captain Guinness and Greaneteen in-behind him. This is an away fixture for Dunvegan, though, and he’s fared no better than sixth on two previous starts outside of Ireland.
Edwardstone
- Age: 8
- BHA Rating: 161
- Jockey: Tom Cannon
- Trainer: Alan King
- Form: 222/1126/5U1353/B111112-
- Tingle Creek Odds: 9/2 with 10bet
Last year’s Arkle hero at the Cheltenham Festival, Edwardstone seeks proper jumping ground to get his campaign underway. That wasn’t available for either the Shloer Chase or Hurst Park Handicap Chase on Saturdays in November, however, and it might be a similar story here. Trainer Alan King simply won’t risk him on too sound a surface first time out.
An impressive course and distance winner when storming 16 lengths clear of a small field in the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase 12 months ago, Edwardstone has smart form to his name. While he was the leading British two-mile novice over fences last term, he’s one of the Tingle Creek entries that wouldn’t be certain to run.
Edwardstone is also a strong stayer, but that makes him vulnerable to speedy types on quicker ground. You can see why King can’t commit to running his star jumper without some rain. That’s not around in current weather forecasts, so the wraps may not come off Edwardstone just yet.
Funambule Sivola
- Age: 7
- BHA Rating: 163
- Jockey: Charlie Deutsch
- Trainer: Venetia Williams
- Form: 22/0F55/1512112/29112P-
- Tingle Creek Odds: 16/1 with 10bet
Given that his last two wins came over two miles, Funambule Sivola could return to action at Sandown. It looks significant that trainer Venetia Williams hasn’t entered him in the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon where he finished second on reappearance last season. Success in the Game Spirit at Newbury races in February showed how Funambule Sivola is effective at this trip.
That set him up for a tilt at the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Festival. Funambule Sivola was a shock 40/1 runner-up on that grand stage when two of the big guns didn’t fire. The form has since been advertised by the third over a longer trip. With a decent record fresh, Funambule Sivola may be overpriced.
Gentleman De Mee
- Age: 6
- BHA Rating: 164
- Jockey: Mark Walsh
- Trainer: Willie Mullins
- Form: 22/10/752111-U
- Tingle Creek Odds: 15/2 with 10bet
As the most lightly-raced of all Tingle Creek entries this year, Gentleman De Mee has most scope for further progress. Unseating his rider when hampered by a faller at the last after tiring in the Grade 3 Poplar Square Chase at Naas on reappearance isn’t exactly ideal prep for Sandown.
Willie Mullins and JP McManus are powerful connections, however, and Gentleman De Mee beat Edwardstone fair and square at Aintree in the spring. That did come after a long season for his rival, though, so a rematch would be most interesting. Whether we get that here remains to be seen but it’s form that makes Gentleman De Mee worth his place in the line-up.
Greaneteen
- Age: 8
- BHA Rating: 171
- Jockey: Harry Cobden
- Trainer: Paul Nicholls
- Form: 3/611/01114/12341/41251-1
- Tingle Creek Odds: 7/4 with 10bet
All three of the Grade 1 victories posted by Greaneteen to date have come over this course and distance. Of the remaining Tingle Creek entries that could run here, that alone makes him a Sandown specialist and worthy of respect. Greaneteen isn’t just race-fit but arguably coming into his defence of the crown he won last year in better form.
Off the same rating 12 months ago, he couldn’t win the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter races but this season he bolted up by seven lengths. That weight-carrying reappearance victory has earned Greaneteen a 3lb rise in the weights. It’s a peak rating of 171 and, given his track record, that equates to leading claims.
Shishkin
- Age: 8
- BHA Rating: 176
- Jockey: Nico de Boinville
- Trainer: Nicky Henderson
- Form: 3/11/F111/11111/11P-
- Tingle Creek Odds: 11/10 with 10bet
The Shishkin bubble well and truly burst when he lost his unbeaten chasing record at Cheltenham in March. A combination of deteriorating ground and a rare bone condition found afterwards explain why he was pulled-up when all the rage for Champion Chase glory. Nicky Henderson won’t risk Shishkin on what he feels to be extremes of ground again.
As the shortest price of all the Tingle Creek entries in the betting, it’s taken on trust that this horse’s problems are behind him. Shishkin has no experience of Sandown either with Henderson dissatisfied with what he’d seen at home from his stable star this time last year.
On ratings alone, Shishkin should be clear favourite but his involvement isn’t certain. This is the comeback trail for him and Henderson wants optimum conditions. It’s a similar story with Edwardstone above. Just like that one, there’s always a feeling that Shishkin may be better over further as he gets older too.
