Three BIG Talking Points From Arsenal 3-1 Manchester United

Arsenal’s late rally buried Manchester United after VAR denied the visitors a late winner from Alejandro Garnacho. There were a lot of takeaways from this game and here are the three big talking points.

VAR Strikes Again

VAR was at the heart of another big clash in the Premier League on Sunday. Man Utd thought they’d won it late on through a Garnacho goal. VAR deemed it to be offside but different angles give us different perspectives. Man Utd manager Erik Ten Hag was adamant in his post-match interview that the goal should’ve stood. “You saw the game, but it’s no offside. Wrong angle,” Ten Hag told Sky Sports.

Ten Hag also thought Declan Rice’s 96th minute goal shouldn’t have counted because of a foul on Jonny Evans and that they should’ve had a penalty with a foul by Gabriel on new signing Rasmus Hojlund. “The penalty on Hojlund. And then we concede a goal that’s a foul on Jonny Evans, it’s so clear and obvious,” the Dutchman added.

Man Utd’s poor away streak continues

One of the biggest problems with Man Utd in recent seasons is their poor away record. The Liverpool 7-0, Brentford 4-0 and Man City 6-3 springs to mind from last season. They’ve already faced a 2-0 defeat to Spurs earlier this season. The performance in this game was a lot better and there are still many good takeaways for Ten Hag despite defeat. They were more defensively sound (until Harry Maguire and Evans came on), good counter-attacking football and a clinical edge to them. It’s still the patient game in Ten Hag’s rebuild of Man Utd but away performances may have just turned a corner. Some concern would be the lack of defensive options for Man Utd as they had to finish the game late on with Evans and Maguire at the back which ultimately cost them the two late goals.

Arsenal showing resilience once again

Arsenal’s late surge past Manchester United will have given Arsenal fans flashbacks to last season. Their winning mentality and ‘never say die’ attitude was on display here as late goals from summer signing Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus blew United out of the way. There was some cause for concern last weekend as Arsenal only managed a point against Fulham. It looked set for a repeat again here but Arsenal managed to find their mojo that so nearly won them the title last season. Mikel Arteta will be hoping his men can keep that momentum going and hopefully challenge Man City for the title once again.
