Thierry Henry has slammed PSG supporters for jeering Lionel Messi in their recent league match and has pleaded with the Argentine to return to Barcelona ‘for the love of football’.

Rumours of a return to La Liga have been constant ever since the Argentina international left his boyhood club in 2021. His time in Paris has not gone according to plan, with the Parisian side failing to progress in the Champions League once again.

Being kicked out of Europe and hearing countless rumours about a possible Messi exit caused fans to turn on the seven time Ballon D’or winner. This led to audible jeers in PSG’s 1-0 defeat to Lyon on Sunday, which the 2022 World Cup Winner has not been used to in his illustrious career.

The jeers that Lionel Messi received has not been well received by players, pundits and footballing fans around the world. The Argentinian’s former teammate, Thierry Henry, made his thoughts on his nation’s treatment of Messi very clear.

The Frenchman said: “It’s embarrassing to hear whistles from the Parc. You can’t whistle one of the best players on the team, who has 13 goals and 13 assists this season. Personally, I would like to see [Messi] finish his career at Barcelona, in Europe.”

“I don’t really like it, for the love of football he should go back to Barcelona,” Henry added.

A move back to Barcelona appears to be the likely outcome in the summer, with both parties highlighting their respect for one another. However, the La Liga giants are still facing financial troubles, alongside match fixing allegations .
