Barcelona were forced to play almost 10 minutes with 10 men in Wednesday night’s 1-0 victory over Porto. That’s because 16-year-old Lamine Yamal had to leave the pitch around the 70th minute mark as he was experiencing some stomach problems.
Yamal broke a record as he became the youngest player to start in a Champions League match at just 16 years and 83 days. The record previously belonged to former Chelsea left-back Celestine Babayaro.
The young forward didn’t manage to get onto the scoresheet in their 1-0 victory but it’s clear the nerves may have got the better of him as he took a prolonged bathroom break that saw him out of action for a good 10 minutes. He was lucky Porto didn’t capitalise on the chance to get level with the extra man.
Barcelona coach Xavi had obviously had enough of waiting for the poor boy and he was eventually subbed off for Sergio Roberto.
Xavi speaking on the situation after the game said: “Lamine Yamal felt poorly. He had been telling me for a while that he wasn’t feeling good, that he was feeling sick. That his belly was hurting. We took advantage of a break [in play], but he was unable to carry on.”
Not the Champions League debut that Yamal was dreaming about the night before. However, it could’ve been worse. Just ask Gary Lineker.
