The Last Time Manchester United Were Knocked Out Of Europe In A Group Stage?
It’s actually been 18 years since Manchester United were completely knocked out of Europe in a group stage. All the way back in the 2005/06 season. They were drawn with Benfica, Villarreal and Lille. Manchester United only managed one win in the group and that was a 2-1 win over Benfica.
United ended up losing twice and drawing 0-0 three times. This resulted in Manchester United finishing 4th and were dumped out of European competition.
What happened in Manchester United’s latest group?
Manchester United ended up with only one win in the latest group; a 1-0 win over Copenhagen which they were lucky to get Andre Onana had to save a last-minute penalty.
United lost both games against Bayern Munich, the reverse fixture at Copenhagen and were unable to beat Galatasaray.
United have ended their Champions League campaign on four points.
What’s next for Manchester United?
Things don’t look to be getting any easier for Ten Hag’s men as the Christmas fixture list looks very tough for them. Their next game is always one of the biggest of their season as they travel to Anfield to face league leaders Liverpool. Manchester United won’t need reminding that the last time they played their they were handed a 7-0 thrashing.
Chances of that happening are slim but any defeat for Manchester United against Liverpool is always one they won’t be able to live down for a while.
The Red Devils also face a trip to the London Stadium and host flying Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
