That was until a heated exchange between Granit Xhaka and Trent Alexander-Arnold woke up a sleeping Anfield crowd, leading to a spirited comeback from the hosts to cancel out Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus’ first-half goals.
Roberto Firmino’s 87th minute equaliser left Arsenal agonisingly short once more, and stretched their winless run at Anfield to 11 years.
