The first North East derby in eight years is almost here as Sunderland and Newcastle go toe-to-toe in the FA Cup 3rd round at the Stadium of Light on 6th January 2024.
The clash between the old foes is expected to be a hostile and lively affair as the Magpies try to avoid a potential banana skin, but a home win wouldn’t be a huge surprise.
The Tyne-Wear/Wear-Tyne derby has provided some brilliant moments over the years so here at SportsLens, we take a look back at the five most memorable clashes since 2000.
Newcastle 5-1 Sunderland
It was a Halloween horror-show for Sunderland back in October 2010 when they were on the receiving end of a 5-1 battering from their rivals.
Newcastle blew the Black Cats apart at St James’ Park as Kevin Nolan helped himself to a hat-trick with Shola Ameobi hitting a brace as well.
Darren Bent scored a 90th minute consolation but there was absolutely no denying the Magpies the local bragging rights in this Premier League clash.
Sunderland 2-1 Newcastle
Kieron Richardson was the Sunderland hero when he scored the winning goal at the Stadium of Light in this Premier League clash from the 2008/09 season.
The former England international netted a sublime free-kick after 75 minutes to give the Black Cats their first Wear-Tyne derby success in eight years.
Djibril Cissé had given the hosts the lead before Shola Ameobi equalised just ten minutes later. Roy Keane and Joe Kinnear were in the dug outs on that day.

Newcastle 0-3 Sunderland
This 2013 Tyne-Wear derby day victory for Sunderland is notable for Paolo Di Canio’s exuberant touchline celebrations, especially after Stéphane Sessègnon’s opener.
The Italian maverick must have taken note from Jose Mourinho as his side wiped the floor with Newcastle, on their own patch as well.
Further goals from Adam Johnson and David Vaughan sent the Black Cats supporters into delirium, and Di Canio couldn’t contain himself with a huge knee slid and scrum celebration to really rub salt into the Magpies’ wounds.
Sunderland 1-4 Newcastle
Sunderland endured a miserable Premier League campaign in 2005/06 and they took a real trouncing by their rivals in this Wear-Tyne derby.
Justin Hoyte gave the Black Cats the lead before the the Magpies took over. Michael Chopra, Alan Shearer and Charles N’Zogbia all got on the scoresheet in a six minute second-half spell.
Albert Luque added a late fourth to ensure the points went back to St James’ Park with the Mackem’s already relegated to the Championship.
Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle
Jermain Defoe entered himself into Sunderland folklore back in 2015 when his stunning volley – arguably the best ever North East derby goal – secured a huge 1-0 victory over Newcastle to ease their relegation fears.
Defoe is one of the finest to ever do it in the Premier League and he sent a packed Stadium of Light into a frenzy with his corking strike from range on the cusp of half-time.
The victory for the Black Cats was their fifth in a row against their greatest rivals and they would go on to secure their top-flight status.
