Andy Murray has been added to the BBC Sports Personality of the Year betting after his miraculous run of wins at the 2023 Australian Open
Britain’s bookmakers have been forced to add Andy Murray into the betting for the 2023 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award after an influx of requests following his recent run at the Australian Open.
Murray, is the only man to have won SPOTY three times (2013, 2015, 2016) in addition to the Junior and Team Awards but it was assumed his days as an ambassador for British sports were over following a hip surgery in 2018 and subsequent struggles.
However, the 35-year-old has rolled back the years in Melbourne and is now being considered a serious candidate to scoop the Sports Personality of the Year Award, after being added to the betting at 25/1.
Murray will face competition from England cricketer Ben Stokes, who is hoping to lead the nation to an Ashes victory in 2023 and Lewis Hamilton, a duel SPOTY winner and widely regarded as the world’s best racing driver, even if he had a poor 2022.
Another sporting legend, Frankie Dettori, is prominent in the early odds after announcing that 2022 will be his final year as a jockey aged 52 and is expected to go on a victory parade this year. The Italian would normally not be a candidate but is one of only two non-UK men ever to be on the SPOTY podium (after New Zealander Barry Briggs in 1964) and the public money for a lifetime achievement award style win has forced the oddsmakers to include Dettori in the betting at 20/1.
2022 Sports Personality winner Beth Mead is 25/1 for a repeat, while Emma Raducanu, who was beaten in the Australian Open in the second round by American Coco Gauff, is at 25/1 to follow up her 2021 win this year.

Sportslens Head of News Lee Astley said: “It is testament to the British public’s love and respect for Andy Murray that he has had to be added to the Sports Personality of the Year market above some candidates who may have potentially had better years statistically.
“Murray’s heroics in Melbourne have captured the public’s imagination and if he is to continue and have a strong run at Wimbledon then he is very likely to be shortened still in the market.
“Given that SPOTY is a public vote, we also have to consider Frankie Dettori in the betting. The racing legend could follow 2010 with a career ending gong and it would be no surprise to see both Murray and Dettori on the podium, perhaps with an England cricketer when the awards are handed out in November.”
