The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has sacked women’s team manager Jorge Vilda, just weeks after he led Spain to victory at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
This controversy started when RFEF president Luis Rubiales kissed Spain forward Jennifer Hermoso on the lips during the awarding ceremony. Rubiables apologised but claimed the kiss was ‘consensual’. Hermoso then came out and said that the kiss was not consensual, thus beginning the controversy and calls for action. Rubiales was also seen grabbing his crotch while celebrating in the stands beside Her Majesty Queen Letizia of Spain and her daughter.
Footage later emerged of Vilda inappropriately touching a staff member whilst celebrating a Spain goal against England, which put him under fire. He only worsened his claim by clapping a speech made Rubiales where he refused to step down amid claims made by ‘fake feminsts’ and promised to give Vilda a new contract.
Rubiales was given a 90-day suspension by FIFA regarding the speculation whilst Vilda received the sack yesterday. Vilda came out and claimed the sacking was ‘unfair’.

Moments after the sacking, Spain appointed coach Montse Tomé as their new manager. She will be the first woman to ever hold this position in Spain. The former Barcelona player is said to be a positive change for the women’s environment, ensuring their safety off the field.
England Lionesses manager Sarina Wiegman has spoken out about the scandal when picking up her ‘coach of the year’ award, saying: “But of course it feels a little bit different, we all know the issues around the Spanish team, and it really hurts me as a coach, as a mother of two daughters, as a wife and a human being.
“We just talked about 1988 and the game has grown so much, but there’s also a long way to go in women’s football and in society, and I would like to dedicate this award to the Spanish team, the team that played in the World Cup such great football that everyone enjoyed”.
