Manchester United’s leading goal scorer and former Derby County manager Wayne Rooney is reportedly ‘interested’ in taking the reigns at Southampton.

Rooney is currently the manager of MLS side D.C. United, where he was previously at as a player after 17 years in the Premier League. His first taste of management in England came when he took over Derby County in the Championship, where he was dropped in the deep end.

Derby suffered a 21 point deduction following numerous financial breaches, this amount of points lost all-but-confirmed their relegation from the Championship. He manged the Rams 84 times winning 25 and losing 28, he parted way with the club following their demotion to League One.

Southampton fans reacted to the possibility of Rooney’s appointment, with many being sceptical about the Evertonian’s experience as a manager.

The 37-year-old is in pre-season, as he plans to impress during his first managerial MLS campaign. D.C. United finished bottom last season and will be hoping that Rooney can turn things around this year. However, it may be hard for the Brit to decline a Premier League move.

Southampton are currently priced at 3/11 to be relegated this season, according to UK betting sites, as Nathan Jones only managed one league win during his 4 month tenure. The Saints have been linked with other English footballing greats, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, with Aston Villa and Everton sacking them both respectively.

Southampton travel to Chelsea in their next league fixture and will be hoping to have found an appropriate replacement for Jones beforehand.
