The footballing world was left stunner on Sunday afternoon when Alejandro Garnacho struck the most outrageous overhead kick for Manchester United. Sportslens have decided to look back at all the incredible overhead kicks that have been scored.
Christian Benteke vs Manchester United – 12th September 2015
Life at Liverpool wasn’t great for Benteke but at least he can take pride in this stunning strike. Liverpool would go on to lose the game 3-1 but this goal still gets talked about to this day.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic vs England – 14 November 2012
Arguably the best on here. Ibrahimovic scored all four in Sweden’s 4-2 triumph over England in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. This no doubt is the pick of the bunch despite an empty goal. The technique and raw skill to even get it on target from that range has to be admired.
Gareth Bale vs Liverpool – 26th May 2018
To do this in a Champions league final is sublime. With the score level at 1-1 and with 25 minutes to go; Bale does the unthinkable and produces one of the greatest goals you’ll ever see. He came off the bench too.
Cristiano Ronaldo vs Juventus – 3rd April 2018
Ronaldo thinks this goal is his best and it’s clear to see why. In the Champions League quarter-final in the year Real Madrid would go onto to win it. Even for Ronaldo this one deserves for him to take a bow. This also 10 months after another Champions League overhead kick in the same fixture.
Mario Mandzukic vs Real Madrid – 3rd June 2017
Another overhead kick in the Champions league final? Yep. This time it came against Real Madrid. Lovely chest control and then an audacious finish from Mandzukic to level before half-time. Unfortunately for Juve, they ended up losing the game 4-1.
Mehdi Taremi vs Chelsea – 13th April 2021
Unfortunately this one was behind closed doors but still absolutely worth a mention. The year Chelsea ended up winning the Champions League, this beauty came against them.
Alejandro Garnacho vs Everton – 26th November 2023
Still in your memory as it happened recently but i’ll give you another chance to look at this beauty. Manchester United’s future star.
Emre Can vs Watford – 1st May 2017
Wonderful technique from the big German. A big goal for Liverpool to send them on their way to Champions League football.
Dimitar Bervatov vs Liverpool – September 19th 2010
What a day for Bervatov as he scored a hat-trick to help Manchester United beat bitter rivals Liverpool 3-2. Of course, this is one of the three goals that he scored that day.
Mauro Bressan vs Barcelona – 2nd November 1999
The oldest goal on here and arguably the best. At nearly 25 years old, here’s this screamer once again.
Oscarine Masuluke goal vs Orlando Pirates – 1st December 2016
Not often a goalkeeper scores but to do it like this is incredible. To level the game in stoppage time in that manner and then do that celebration after…. well it deserves to be on the list.
Phillip Mexes vs Anderlecht – November 21st 2012
The fact that this and Ibrahimovic’s goal came in the same week is crazy. The Champions League is definitely the place to do it.
Ronaldinho vs Villarreal – 1st March 2007
Ronaldinho’s last goal for Barcelona and oh boy was it spectacular. It lit La Liga up.
Rivaldo vs Valencia – 1st June 2001
One of the greatest hat-tricks of all time topped off with one of the greatest overhead kicks of all time.
Alireza Jahanbakhsh vs Chelsea – 1st Janaury 2020
Jahanbakhsh and Brighton entered the new year in style with a wonderful overhead kick to get a point from Chelsea.
Andy Carroll vs Crystal Palace – 14th January 2017
Stunning from England’s finest striker.
Sebastian Haller vs Crystal Palace – 16th December 2020
Is there a theme here between West Ham and Crystal Palace? By the way, they play each other this Sunday…
Wayne Rooney vs Manchester City – 12th February 2011
Finally, we get to the Premier League’s most iconic overhead kick. You’ve seen it 1000 times but let’s make it a 1001 times.
